Our advice outreach to South Maroubra’s Hub@Lexo has been busier than ever this year, and it’s great to be able to celebrate with the local community including Randwick City Council. We loved coming down to Lexo in 2024 for outreaches, community education sessions and community gatherings. See you in 2025!

Thanks to everyone at KLC and UNSW Law & Justice for donating to South Eastern Community Connect (SECC) People’s Pantry. Staff donated pantry items and gift cards as well as making donations directly to SECC. SECC plays a vital role in alleviating poverty and bringing connection and joy to the local community- total legends!

This week we were thrilled that Professor Prue Vines presented a professional training session for Prince of Wales Hospital social workers, organised by KLC for our Health Justice Partnership. The social work team requested a session on understanding wills and estate issues, and we knew just the person to help! Thanks again Prue for an expert and very well-received session. KLC has become aware of complex scams targeting Chinese international students in Sydney, where victims are contacted by fake "police" or other authorities and asked to pay money or risk being deported or getting their families in trouble. If you know of anyone in this situation please urge them to get free legal advice straight away. https://lnkd.in/g4rH_MRU

Amazing work Redfern Legal Centre! RLC has worked tirelessly to make sure all unlawful NSW COVID fines are withdrawn and repaid. An epic achievement! 👏 👑 🌟
Yesterday we had a big win! The NSW Government will withdraw and repay more than 23,000 COVID fines following a successful joint legal campaign with Maurice Blackburn Lawyers. Two years ago, the government withdrew around 33,000 fines after we brought a test case that found they were invalid. Now, the remaining 23,000 COVID fines will also be withdrawn. Samantha Lee told the ABC, this win is justice for people in NSW who were severely and unfairly impacted by the issuing of fines. "Some people lost their licence, some people couldn't register their vehicles, particularly those living in regional areas. It was a real detrimental impact on them." "Having this lifted is a real justice in their circumstances, but it's something that should have been done many, many months ago, and the fact that the government has waited so long is the appalling aspect of this whole story." Who'd have thought a bunch of lawyers would get so competitive over a couple of rounds of trivia?!! KLC recently held its annual end of year party for our wonderful volunteer lawyers. Congratulations to team "Make the Other Wednesday Night Great Again" for their (controversial) win and a huge thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a great night. And to all our volunteers- you truly make all the difference. Until next year! 💎 👑 🌟 🙌UNSW Law & Justice

🌊 ♒ Did you know that Artificial Intelligence (AI) models use *huge* amounts of water to cool their data centres? This year KLC law students participated in the Student Law Clinics #globaldayofaction organised by York Law School - University of York, focusing on the theme of water and the unexpected ways many services rely on astonishing quantities of clean freshwater. Our students set up a guessing game where participants had to guess the amount of water used to generate short AI prompts- and all were surprised by the results. Well done to our creative students. ♒ 🌊
