“Why doesn’t she just leave?” … A question that gets thrown around way too much in today’s society. For many victims of domestic and family violence, it’s not as simple as walking away. Many don’t want to end their relationships, they just want the violence to stop. Leaving can also be the most dangerous time for a victim, as the risk of violence often escalates when they try to escape. Domestic and family violence is about power and control. It extends far beyond physical violence, often involving emotional, financial, and psychological abuse that traps victims in a cycle of fear and dependence. It is overwhelmingly perpetrated by men in intimate relationships, both during and after separation. Instead of asking, “Why doesn’t she just leave?” we need to ask, “Why does he abuse?” and “How can we create a society where women feel safe and supported?” If you or someone you know needs support, call 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) for confidential help. #enddomesticviolence #supportsurvivors #kyupproject #youarenotalone

About us
As Australia comes together to try and address our current epidemic of domestic violence, one woman is using her own experience to help empower young people to find their voice and learn about positive relationships. Mel Thomas is a writer, speaker, media commentator, mother of two girls a nd black belt with more than 15 years martial arts experience in Hapkido, the Korean art of self-defence. In 2013, Mel was awarded a scholarship with the Layne Beachley Aim for the Stars Foundation and founded the KYUP! Project in response to a wave of child-on-child assaults and family violence reports in her local area. Pronounced KEY-UP! and and named after a martial arts power shout, KYUP! is empowering Australian's to value and champion their safety and wellbeing with the principles of self worth and the basics of self defence.

Domestic violence is not just a personal issue, it’s a national crisis. In Australia, nearly one woman is killed every single week by a current or former partner. Behind every statistic is a mother, sister, daughter, or friend whose life was taken too soon. This is not something we can ignore. We need to keep this conversation alive, push for stronger protections, and support those at risk. Every voice matters. Every action counts. At KYUP! Project, we are committed to educating, empowering, and advocating for a future free from violence. But we can’t do it alone. You can be part of the change by raising awareness, supporting survivors, and demanding action. If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out to 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) for confidential support. Let’s stand together. Let’s make change happen. #kyupproject #enddomesticviolence #notonemore #speakup #awarenessmatters
