👋 Meet Karl, Spatial Data and Technology Principal. While Karl’s role focuses on geographical data sharing, his career journey at Landgate began in a completely different area of the business! What do you do? My job focuses on enabling the sharing of location information and other data across the WA Government. As part of the Data Sharing team, I provide technical leadership and direction for spatial platforms like the Shared Location Information Platform (SLIP) and Data WA. These platforms help discover, access, and share public sector data in WA. How long have you worked at Landgate? I started at Landgate in 2006 and have had the opportunity to work in various teams since then. I began in Human Resources, where I gained a solid understanding of Landgate's operations and core functions. My interest in spatial data grew, which led me to pursue a Graduate Diploma in Geographical Information Science (GIS). As I undertook this study, I sought more hands-on experience, eventually transitioning into a role within the Location Services team. What’s your favourite part about working at Landgate? There is a lot of opportunity to be involved in different roles and initiatives. I find working for government rewarding especially when I know that something I’m working on is going to benefit the community or contribute to better informed decisions. Do you have any memorable moments you would like to share? There have been plenty over the years. Two that stand out are being involved in the successful transition of all Landgate data and systems to GDA2020, Australia’s primary horizontal datum, and more recently, contributing to the development of the Aboriginal Place Names Project. What does your career path look like? With its focus on innovation, community impact, and employee growth, Landgate offers a unique environment where you can shape your career while contributing to projects that make a real difference. It's International Men's Day, and we’re celebrating the diverse experiences of men and boys in our community. This year's official theme is "Men's Health Champions”, which provides a great opportunity to explore some of the social issues impacting men’s health and the people leading solutions. Our team had the privilege of hearing from John Rich, Chairperson of Men's Health & Wellbeing Western Australia, during an inspiring internal event. John shared valuable insights on health and wellbeing, touching on the importance of relationships and positive parenting, and left us with actionable ways we can all support the men in our lives. Brad McBride, one of our General Managers, facilitated today’s event; “Listening to John Rich was a powerful reminder of the importance of addressing men’s health openly and compassionately. John’s insights on how small changes in our daily interactions can have a big impact on the wellbeing of men and boys really resonated with me. We can all play a role in supporting healthier, more inclusive communities.” As a team, we’re committed to creating an inclusive workplace, and events like today’s foster meaningful conversations on how we can better support each other, regardless of gender. 📸 Pictured: John Rich, Men’s Health and Wellbeing WA; and Brad McBride, Landgate. #IMD24 #MensHealthChampions #InternationalMensDay2024 #MensHealthAndWellbeingWA #MensHealth #strengthinasking

Valuer-General Carlo Tassone was thrilled to attend the Kimberley and Pilbara Cattlemen's Association Conference in Karratha earlier this month. The event went off without a hitch thanks to Bron Christensen, CEO of KPCA and her incredible team. 🎤 Sessions on biosecurity and carbon were particularly insightful, providing valuable information on protecting livestock and managing carbon in agriculture. The “Blokes Talking Bloke Things” session was touching and poignant, highlighting important conversations. 👏 A special thanks to all speakers and attendees for making this conference a memorable and impactful experience.

Do you recognise this unique slice of the WA coastline? These #flashbackfriday pictures of the City of Rockingham from 1965, 1989, 2001 and 2024 capture several well known locations! 🌉 Top left of image - Cape Peron and Point Peron, with the Garden Island Causeway appearing a few short years after the first image was captured. 🐧 Bottom left of image - Penguin Island, a small 12.5 hectare island found less than 700m from the coast, open to visitors during the warmer months. 🏘️ Middle of image - Lake Richmond, quietly watching on as Rockingham develops around it over the decades. On this Remembrance Day, we honour and remember the courage, service and sacrifices made by our armed forces – past and present. Today we pause at 11am for a minute’s silence to pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country. Let us remember the fallen and reflect on their legacy. Lest we forget. 🌺

🧐 Did you know? A tape calibration bench is a specialised piece of equipment used to ensure the accuracy and precision of measuring tapes, and an important part of Landgate’s history. It was made from a tubular steel beam, 31 metres long, supported by brick pillars with a laminated bench top. Circular holes had been cut in the bench top to accommodate raised stainless steel bench marks at various intervals between 0 and 30 metres. 🏢 Housed in the 1990’s in Midland building’s laboratory, known as “the tape tunnel”, this specialised bench enabled precise calibration of measuring tapes using the calibrated raised stainless steel bench marks. Why was it important? Landgate is appointed as a verifying authority for reference standards of measurement by the National Measurement Institute, it ensured accuracy in measurements across the state. The tape calibration bench was recalibrated every two years. ⏱ Fast forward to 2024, and we now rely on Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) instrument baselines for our verification processes, with three EDM baselines located in Bentley, Kalgoorlie and Busselton. Using an instrument calibrated by the National Measurement Institute (NMI), the baselines are recalibrated at regular intervals, continuing our commitment to accuracy. Pictured 📷 Image 1 - Landgate's Tape Calibration Bench in the tape laboratory. Image 2 - Bentley EDM Baseline Pillar. Image 3 - The Tape Calibration Bench now featured as an installation in our Midland office today, commemorating a time in Landgate's surveying history. #dyk #didyouknow #throwbackthursday #history #landgatehistory #landgatelegacy #surveyinghistory
