Since 2014, the LEX-NG Fund, supported by our travelers, has invested in @natgeopristineseas National Geographic Pristine Seas, helping to support the expeditions of Explorer in Residence Enric Sala and his team of scientists and filmmakers. Together, our two ocean-faring teams have been on a mission to inspire the creation of marine protected areas around the world. Fast forward ten years and the impact is huge! To date, Pristine Seas has conducted more than 45 expeditions, inspiring the creation of 29 MPAs covering 6.8 million sq km and counting. From the remote and vibrant waters of Kiribati to the coasts of Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia, The Maldives, Micronesia, Canada, Dominica, and beyond — Pristine Seas has been championing ocean conservation worldwide. Pristine Seas is on year two of The Global Expedition — their five-year voyage in the tropical Pacific to support the global goal of protecting at least 30% of the ocean by 2030. The National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions Australia team is excited to announce that we have won the Australian Travel Industry Association -National Tourism Industry Awards (NTIA) “Sustainability Award - Supplier" for 2024. The NTIA honors excellence in the Australian travel industry through a comprehensive process. This includes nominations from industry professionals, public voting, and thorough evaluations by a panel of judges. The winners are revealed at a Gala Awards Dinner, showcasing the remarkable achievements and innovations within the sector.

Last June, 2024 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Rebecca Maynard embarked on an expedition to Alaska. Since returning home, she’s brought the experience back to her AP Environmental Science & Honors Biology students through experiential learning and citizen science projects—empowering them to make a positive difference in the world.    “I was already passionate about environmental science, but being a part of the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship really solidified the fact that we need to spread awareness about the impacts humans are causing on delicate ecosystems, such as the temperate rainforests of Alaska,” she reported. “It’s important to me to teach as many people as I can, in the community and in my classrooms, about the need to protect these beautiful places on Earth.”     The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship is a professional learning opportunity for pre-K–12 educators made possible through a collaboration between Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society. CSI for the Ocean is a global microplastic and microfiber mapping and monitoring program that utilizes affordable and accessible methods from forensic science for community engagement while revealing and promoting solutions to address plastic pollution. Supported by the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic (LEX-NG) Fund, the project is documenting the type, distribution, concentration and potential sources of microplastics and manmade microfiber in the surface water and air along the expedition tracks of NG-LEX voyages in the Arctic and Southern Ocean. Onboard guests participate alongside #NatGeoExplorer Rachael Z. Miller to collect and process samples to turn data into knowledge, and knowledge into action and impact - all for a clean ocean.  

In 2026, National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions is thrilled to return to the ancient temples and modern cities of Japan on three unforgettable voyages. Encounter spellbinding Kyoto, discover little-known subtropical isles, visit iconic castles and, depending on the itinerary, explore South Korea or Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. Adventurous guests can also join the new, 69-day Epic Northwest Passage: From Iceland to Japan, which pairs these voyages with Iceland and Greenland for a thrilling odyssey across the top of the globe and down to East Asia.

When it comes to culture and history, “Japan really is a land of contrasts,” says Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic Historian Stephen Fisher. In this episode of Expedition Spotlight, Fisher delves more into these cultural juxtapositions, which coexist so perfectly alongside one another.

As a National Geographic Photography Expert, Sisse Brimberg's goal is not just to teach guests how to use a camera, but to show them how to take meaningful photos that convey a story. “It's very rewarding to me when people's eyes are opened and they're impressed with what they can achieve,” says Brimberg.
