In 2016, Liquid partnered with the Queensland Government and the then-named QUT Chair in Digital Economy to design a trial series of innovation sprints. During the trial a broad range of topics and challenges were tested. The briefs became increasingly esoteric as we pushed to see if there was a limit to the type of problem an innovation sprint could solve. These sprints were more successful than anyone expected, and the approach has continued to be rolled out, spawning new projects and initiatives across Government. In this case study, we share practical insights and learnings from the trial, demonstrating how innovation sprints can be a powerful tool for organisations to explore new approaches and challenge conventional thinking. At Liquid, our philosophy is that people create change and technology enables that change. We work with people to deeply understand their needs and behaviours, and we design new services and ways of working that improve outcomes. For this project, prototyping a new user experience and testing it with customers was vital to ensure the re-imagined Australian Bureau of Statistics data collection process was both usable and useful, transitioning from a complex paper process into a frictionless digital experience. We collaborated with the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care to implement an AI-driven semantic search feature on the Head to Health platform. This enhancement enables users to express their mental health needs in everyday language, improving access to relevant information, support services and tools. The pace of innovation in AI means that we’re continuously experimenting to demonstrate the value of emerging technologies for our partners. We take an unknown and then apply creativity, testing, learning and validating to turn the unknown into a path forward that realises the full possibilities. In the context of sensitive areas such as mental health, AI and semantic search is just the first step towards creating a more intuitive, accessible and user-friendly experience.
