Do you think that your body can’t do? I had a client who had multiple permanent conditions, they made it hard for her to move. She asked me if I thought she would be able to do Pilates I said “of course you can do Pilates” At first, it was really challenging. But, she kept at it. After a few months, it got a little easier & she started to enjoy it Then we made it more challenging again But then one day, I asked her to do something that she thought she really couldn’t do. She was scared, but willing to try. We broke it down, we made steps that we later combined to complete the exercise. At the end of the session, she did it! You should have seen the smile on her face! Don’t judge a book by its cover Just like people Did you know that if you are a person who exercises regularly and frequently completes the prescribed weekly exercise (3x resistance trainings 150m cardio) you are less likely to die from any cause as compared to those who don’t? And, it doesn’t matter if your outward appearance doesn’t seem to “reflect your exercise efforts”. Did you know that some people who are totally ripped and do a huge amount of exercise may be putting too much strain on their body, which can be dangerous? And their outward appearance looks as if they are the epitome of health. Extremes don’t seem to work. If we don’t move it’s bad for us. If we work too hard (this is measured differently for everyone & their current training) it’s bad for us. That’s why it’s important to seek guidance from exercise professionals when you’re looking to take on something new, change it up or begin an exercise program. The world has no issues telling us we need to look a certain way I like to challenge what the world has to say on this. I like to think of people as individuals who are all different We all have a certain shape that has a say in the way our outward appearance is. It doesn’t determine the whole picture, but the general picture. On top of our bony structure lay our tissues. Our muscles also determine our outward appearance. Some people have muscle fibres that bulk up more readily, some have muscle fibres that are less bulky. But this doesn’t mean that the bulkier muscle tissued person is stronger, nor does it mean that they are going to look like lifters. Lifters look like lifters because they lift….A LOT. It takes a ton of work to look like a body builder. An elite Marathoner doesn’t want to look like a lifter, because they need a different frame to run the marathon. But, that doesn’t mean they aren’t strong or that they don’t lift. It’s good to be strong if you’re going to run distance. It helps your body function well during endurance events. But, looking like a lifter or a marathoner doesn’t need to be anyone’s ideal. Looking like you, and looking like you are healthy is probably the best way to approach our modern issues with body image. Trying for extremes takes a lot of work, and if that’s your thing I won’t stand in your way. But, I feel that doing your best, knowing that you’re putting in the effort to look after your health way more important. You can’t make gains if you aways do the same. We like routine right? I know I do. But, the thing is, if you’re always doing the same workout, not changing resistance or reps.
