About us

We are Australia's first Creative First Aid agency! We show you an evidence-backed approach to using our innate creativity as a powerful, free and accessible tool for managing and sustaining good mental health, also for keeping us steady when times are tough. When we engage in creativity, it changes our brain, activating and regulating us to be calmer, more connected, grounded, compassionate, open, curious and more able to cope with hard things. MakeShift creates the conditions, using a trauma-informed approach, to discover and find innate creativity, and encourage people to be reminded of the vital importance of play as a human. - Creative First Aid: From one-off large scale events at conferences and festivals, to multi-week courses and programs, we are an award winning provider of innovative, evidence-backed services. #creativeprescribing & Creative Health Practitioner | Vicarious Trauma Educator | Facilitator in Trauma Recovery, Workplace Wellbeing + Gendered violence prevention | Social Worker |Author

Being among peers in #socialprescribing for the past two days at the ASPIRE Australian Social Prescribing Institute of Research and Education #EACH24 conference has been so incredibly bolstering, motivating, validating and exciting. I'm very eager to contribute and work towards a social prescribing movement that works WITH health, as part of the eco-system, but outside of it, shifting away from the very entrenched dynamic of medical practitioners and institutions gatekeeping and 'owning' the expertise of social prescriptions and prescribing. Community workers, librarians, musicians, social workers, OTs, nature guides, artists, cultural educators, neighbourhood centres, therapists, peer workers, sports clubs, arts centres - people in these organisations and local grassroots initiatives deeply understand and hold rich expertise in how to meet, engage, gather and welcome people in ways that support community health and wellbeing. This is expert work developed over years of practice, and the health system stands to learn a lot from us all if social prescribing is going to be embedded into our health system and through PHNs in any meaningful way! This is the broad network that needs infrastructure and funding to continue to meet people in community who critically benefit from the social engagement and experience. Very grateful to have met so many of these in folks in the last few days. It's time for new ways of crafting a 'health' system, not an 'illness' system.
