How Much Does It Cost a Couple to Climb Maslow’s Pyramid in Sydney? Ever wondered how income levels align with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs? I asked Perplexity this question: "Based on the mean income level for Australians, visualise Maslow's hierarchy of needs according to approximate income levels for a couple living in Sydney." Here’s the fascinating (and slightly terrifying) result: 🏔️ Self-Actualisation: $300,000+/year ✨ Self-Esteem Needs: $240,000 - $300,000/year ❤️ Belongingness Needs: $180,000 - $240,000/year 💪 Safety Needs: $140,000 - $180,000/year 🌱 Physiological Needs: $0 - $140,000/year This visualisation isn’t perfect, but it’s a fascinating and creative way to think about how our financial situation influences the cost of living and the pursuit of fulfilment. In case you're curious, the median income for Australians, taking into account both full-time and part-time workers, is approximately $67,600 per year as of 2024. (according to ABS). For a couple, that’s $135,200 combined, which places them right at the edge of meeting their safety needs. For many, life feels like a constant cycle of “work to live” rather than “live to work.” And sadly, most don’t have the privilege to choose otherwise. No wonder so many people are stressed right now. With the rising cost of living, tough job market, and the housing affordability crisis, we've got a BIG problem. #wealthyimmigrant #CostOfLiving #Sydney

  • Described as a “must read” article that “deserves more than LinkedIn”, here is pur CEO’s take on what Brian Thompson’s murder means for us all - A take no media outlet would publish.

View profile for Kane Jackson, graphic

Nobody would publish my take on Brian Thompson's murder. In fact, I've never had an article so rejected. One editor insisted Brian was a hero, another, that they'd covered the subject enough, another, that my words weren't relevant enough to business. Perhaps it was my Taylor Swift references. Perhaps it was calling poor people animals. Perhaps it was saying that Brian Thompson's murder is closer to the beginning of a terrifying story than it is to the end. In any case, here are 837 imperfect words on the impact financial inequality has on us, and the choice that people on both sides of it have to make. We can choose sides in a class war and draw up battle plans, or, we can try to bridge the gap that makes us want to fight one. I’ve committed my life to this subject because I believe humanity's survival depends on what we choose.

  • Everyday is a great day to solve cruelty with kindness. But today is perfect. Let's get behind Mark and help him have a Merry Christmas!

I don’t know Mark’s story but yesterday I sat in Hyde Park between meetings and listened to him sing. As I did, an arsehole man with his friends walked up and kicked his sign away, laughing as he did. It was disgusting. I watched Mark gather himself, wipe away a tear, smile at a stranger who walked past, physically hold back his feelings and start singing…. wait for it….. “what a wonderful world” 🤯 And he sung it beautifully, too. But after that he started packing up so I went and asked if he was okay and all he said, while choking back tears, was “why would someone do that?” I don’t know why someone would do that. I gave Mark all I can afford right now. But with his permission I’ve shared his details in this photo. Please let Mark know, with as many small transactions as possible hitting his account today, that the world can be wonderful. $2. $5. Or $5,000 - please flood Mark’s bank feed with kindness. His PayID is 0452462922. I made my payment reference “a wonderful world” - maybe you could too ❤️ I’m sorry people are assholes, Mark. I hope this goes viral and you make more than that flog earns in a year 🫶🏻 Mark’s not on LinkedIn - so he won’t know about this. And that's just perfect. Because kindness doesn't need thanks :) Please, tag people. Repost. Shout it from the rooftops.

Last week, a post by a darling of the white male tech complex went viral when he announced his retirement from the extractive industry he helped create: BNPL. Triumphant in his success - built on Australia’s most vulnerable with loopholes he called a business - sycophants rushed to celebrate him. Alongside his gratitude came a declaration of love for the company—and the sale of half his shares, despite attesting its future had just begun. It was a textbook example of what's wrong with the startup and investment industry: the uncritical celebration of mediocrity which so often accompanies the systematic strip-mining of our society. It was the usual culprits: those who celebrate the amassing of personal wealth at any cost, rushed to celebrate the wealth extraction he'd cloaked in the language of progress - as they so often do. The world is crumbling; wealth inequality is growing, social division is thriving, the wealthy are getting wealthier because the poor are getting poorer - still, they celebrated his extraction. It's time we demand more of those we celebrate and aspire to be like. It’s time we demand more of a decade spent working than the unashamed extraction of wealth from those with the least of it to give. It’s time that we celebrate those who contribute more than they take. Who selflessly, bravely, and blindly fight for those with less, instead of devoting time to the discovery of new ways to extract. This ongoing celebration of mediocrity in tech—based almost singularly on a founder’s ability to accumulate wealth, even at society’s expense—is a big part of why society is falling apart. We don’t live on this planet alone; we share it. That’s why we must celebrate those who believe that their own success shouldn’t come at the expense of those around them. All of the data we have points to human happiness coming from more equal societies. Despite that, we continue to cheer those proudly working against us, so that they might accumulate more. Our celebration of others should be hard earned, not rooted in our own selfish aspirations of wealth. For that reason I’ve decided that each year, starting now, I’m going to nominate someone for the Australia Day Awards. Someone who is working to achieve the opposite of what is eating away at the fabric of our society - which so many keep celebrating as if replicating it is a worthy aspiration. Nobody I know in Australia has worked harder this year for equality, fairness and to give more to our society than they take, than 🍇 Kirstin Hunter. Nobody embodies what the Order of Australia means more than Kirstin. Thats why I'm nominating her. So that we might celebrate someone in tech worthy of our aspirations and adulation. Instead of continuing to celebrate extraction hoping that one day it might be you, I encourage everyone to nominate someone around you who gives more than they take from the world that we will always have to share. It's not much. But it's a start ❤️
