MECLA brings together the drive to reduce embodied carbon in the building and construction industry.
About us
Materials & Embodied Carbon Leaders’ Alliance (MECLA) brings together different sectors across the building and construction supply chain to reduce embodied carbon in the industry. Collectively, we can gain a better understanding of barriers to uptake and find the solutions that will be vital to moving ahead. MECLA recognises the growing demand for lower and zero-carbon materials worldwide and is determined to transform the building and construction sector to reach Net-Zero emissions. Together, we are keen to explore how we can work together to move Australia towards a zero-carbon economy and position Australia in the top five zero-carbon materials suppliers.

Last week CEO of Matrak Shane Hodgkins presented 3 case studies on how Matrak's technology is enabling carbon and quantity tracking throughout supply chains, and a fantastic collaboration launched by the organisation with the China Building Materials Exhibition & Trade Centre to collect and report carbon data from overseas products. You can watch the presentation on our youtube now - and if you look closely, you can see the guest appearance of a very young MECLA collaborator👶

Over the past year MECLA Working Group 5d – Construction Materials and Assemblies (WG5d) has developed low carbon specification guides for a large variety of construction assemblies. These specification guides provide details on the emissions associated with various products in Australia, and the opportunities and barriers to decarbonising them. Each of the guides has been developed in consultation with peak bodies from each industry, and provide an industry-wide standardised approach. The specification guides include clay bricks and roof tiles, cement bricks and roof tiles, and piping. In this MECLA Spotlight representatives from WG5d will introduce their specification guides, where the products are at in their decarbonisation journey, and discuss how they can be used.

MECLA members are encouraged to provide feedback to NSW Government's Engineering, Cost and Carbon Library (ECCL), a component of the Transport for NSW Common Data Model for Infrastructure. The ECCL is intended to save industry time and resources through design, tendering, and project reporting, streamlining carbon estimation to align with existing processes.

Congratulations to MECLA Partner Matrak on their announcement, working with a Chinese trade body to track data on real-time production, logistics, QA and carbon data for materials from a network of 30,000 manufacturers overseas. In the complex supply chains construction operates within, improving processes of transparency and data capture is crucial in our journey to decarbonise. This is exemplary work by Co-Founder and CEO Shane Hodgkins and his team! You can also read more about it in his LinkedIn article here: https://lnkd.in/gWivzvnJ

Mandatory climate reporting is here in Australia. But what does mandatory climate-related financial disclosure mean for the construction industry? And how might this new disclosure regime drive embodied carbon reductions in industry across supply chains? In MECLA’s Spotlight on Mandatory Reporting and Embodied Carbon experts from across industry including Darryl Stuckey, Jessica Richmond, Monique Isenheim and Mark Siebentritt come together to discuss the reporting framework and the strategic implications it has on their business practices and approaches to scope 3 emissions. The conversation will go beyond compliance to interrogate how mandatory reporting could drive systems change within industry, and how corporations can make it actionable.
