Why family ties are a non-negotiable for me Family has always been at the centre of my life. Growing up as a first-generation Australian with Egyptian parents, I learned the value of staying connected to our roots. Visits to Egypt were more than just holidays, they were about maintaining the bonds that keep us grounded and connected to where we come from. Even now, as life gets busier, maintaining those family ties remains a non-negotiable for me. For me, that might mean making time to travel back to Egypt to visit extended family or carving out space in my schedule to be fully present with my kids. What I’ve also realised is that these connections don’t just shape our personal lives, they also shape who we are professionally. Being part of a strong family network teaches resilience, empathy and the importance of relationships, all of which are critical in the workplace and in business. Ultimately, these values underpin everything I do. While it’s great to find success in business, it’s also about the people we bring along with us. However, finding the right people is one of the biggest challenges that all businesses must overcome. While years of experience, technical skills and a track record of success are all important, I’ve learned that they’re not the biggest factors I look for when bringing someone in. It’s actually their values that matter most. I’ve realised that hiring someone who aligns with your company’s values creates a much stronger foundation for success. At the core of my business, ethics and transparency are what matter to me. Clients trust us to help them make life-changing decisions and maintaining that trust requires more than just knowledge. You need to have integrity, honesty and a shared sense of purpose. When I hire, I look for someone who embodies these values. Are they ethical in their decision-making? Will they treat clients with respect and fairness? Will they bring the same level of care to the table that I do, even when I’m not directly involved? Skills can be taught. Processes can be refined. But values are intrinsic. If someone shares your vision and is committed to the same standards, the rest falls into place. Teaching my kids resilience One of the most important lessons I want to pass on to my kids is resilience. In a world that constantly changes, being able to handle challenges and adapt is more important than ever. In my work, challenges come up daily, whether it’s managing tough deals or dealing with unexpected setbacks. I try to share some of these moments with my kids in a way that shows them how challenges are a normal part of life. Sometimes I’ll talk about a hard day or a tough decision I had to make and I make sure they see that challenges are opportunities to learn and grow. Remember that your children will model their behaviour on how you as a parent deal with situations. You need to set an example for your children, if you want them to be able to manage situations in the same way. If you want them to be resilient, you need to show them how to do it by modelling it yourself. Whether they’re facing a tough day at school or trying something new, I want them to know that setbacks are just part of the journey. Resilience is a skill that will serve them in every aspect of life, and I’m grateful to have the chance to model it every day.
