Enhancing life and liveability

About us

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life. But the impacts of climate change bring hotter and drier weather, more severe bushfires and unpredictable storms and floods, less rainfall over time, and, of course, the possibility of another drought. By 2030 over six million Melburnians will need water every day. We are in the decade that matters when the actions we take now will define our future. That’s why at Melbourne Water, we are taking action to manage and protect the resources essential to our way of life. From providing clean drinking water, treating sewage so we can recover and re-use our valued resources, working within our community to reduce flood risk, and keeping all 25,000km of Melbourne’s rivers, creeks and catchments healthy, we care for, manage and protect all parts of the water cycle for today, tomorrow and for generations to come. • Heatwave Pressure: How we kept Melbourne’s water flowing 🌡️💦 On February 3, when temperatures hit 38°C, we delivered a record-breaking 2017ML of water to Greater Melbourne, Geelong, and Westernport - that’s 807 Olympic swimming pools worth! 🏊♀️💦 This was the first time in 20 years we’ve exceeded 2,000ML in a day. Huge thanks to our Water Supply Operations teams and supporting staff for keeping high-quality drinking water flowing to millions of Melburnians, even in extreme conditions. While we work hard to keep up with demand, we all have a role to play in making every drop count. During heatwaves, simple steps can make a big difference: 🚿 Take shorter showers 🌱 Water your garden early in the morning 💧 Don’t leave taps running #MelbourneWater #MakeEveryDropCount

  • #OnThisDay 💧 Marking 134 years of the Maroondah Water Supply System 💧 On 18 February 1891, the Watts River Scheme was commissioned, securing a new, reliable water source for Melbourne as the city outgrew Yan Yean Reservoir. This project laid the foundation for the Maroondah Water Supply System, which continues to provide world-class drinking water today. The network has since expanded significantly, with Maroondah Reservoir (built in 1927) playing a critical role. Recognised with Victorian Heritage listing in 2018, it remains an essential part of Melbourne’s water supply. 📸 Swipe through history with us! 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gBwD_Jt7 #MaroondahReservoir #MelbourneWater #OnThisDay #WaterIndustry #Melbourne #MelbourneWaterReservoirs #HeritageVictoria #MaroondahDam #MaroondahTower

  • Science has shaped Melbourne’s water for over 170 years, and today, women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are leading the way in making our city a healthy, sustainable, and liveable place. On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate all the amazing women at Melbourne Water whose passion, expertise and leadership are shaping the future of water. 🌏💧 Did you know that 40% of our workforce is made up of women, with over 60% of our executive leadership team consisting of female leaders? From ensuring 1.25 billion litres of drinking water flow reliably every day, to using innovative science to protect our waterways and catchments, these women are making a lasting impact. We’re committed to fostering a workplace where women in STEM thrive. If you’re passionate about making an impact in the water sector and want to use your science studies to help shape Melbourne’s water future, explore our current roles here: https://lnkd.in/gB8kTkcH #WomenInScience #IDWGS #STEM #MelbourneWater #STEMCareers

  • It's #WorldWetlandsDay! Did you know that wetlands are nature's way of filtering stormwater and protecting our waterways? Melbourne Water manages wetlands across the region, to remove pollutants before they reach our rivers and oceans. Wetlands act like nature’s water filter - slowing water, trapping sediment, and transforming pollutants through plants and microorganisms. They not only improve water quality but also create vital habitats for wildlife. 💧 From managing stormwater to safeguarding biodiversity, Melbourne Water plays a key role in ensuring our wetlands continue to thrive. #MelbourneWater #HealthyWaterways

  • Rising temperatures, rising water use ☀️💧 Did you know that during hot weather, Melbourne’s average daily water use can soar from 1,250 million litres to two billion litres? That’s a significant increase, putting extra pressure on our water supply network. Melbourne Water’s Head of Water Supply, David Norman says “We had a dry spring with the volume of water flowing into our streams across the season around 43 per cent below the 30-year average in 2024.” “Since 2020 however, Melbourne's water consumption has risen by more than 7 per cent or 32 billion litres, and a lot of this extra water gets used during summer." After a run of hot days, it’s important to think about ways to reuse and reduce water, especially when there is a high demand on the power grid and the extra effort required to pump more water. • We’re partnering with the local community to reimagine creeks across Melbourne and transform stormwater drains and creeks into natural waterways and beautiful open spaces. The Strathmore side of the Reimagining Moonee Ponds Creek project creek is now open! 🚶♀️🌳 In this transformed space, we: ✅ Upgraded and relocated the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail further from the waterway, now widened and paved with concrete. ✅ Added a gravel path for leisurely strolls close to the creek. ✅ Planted thousands of grasses, sedges, trees, and shrubs, which are thriving beautifully. This project is delivered in collaboration with the Chain of Ponds Collaboration Group, Merri-bek City Council, Moonee Valley City Council, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, and Wurundjeri Corporationi. • Keeping our water catchments safe and secure is essential for water quality, public health and biodiversity protection. That's why at Melbourne Water, we’re trialling autonomous drones at Silvan Reservoir, which supplies 65% of Melbourne’s drinking water, to enhance the security of our protected catchments—a cornerstone of our world-class water supply system. Equipped with AI, night vision, and high-resolution cameras, these drones: ✅ Provide real-time monitoring of catchments ✅ Detect and differentiate between humans, animals, and vehicles ✅ Reduce contamination risks ✅ Alert teams to invasive species ✅ Help protect endangered wildlife like the Growling Grass Frog and Greater Glider Learn more about our innovative approach to securing Melbourne’s water supply for generations to come: https://bit.ly/40nDHbY #MelbourneWater #WaterSecurity #Innovation

  • Yan Yean Reservoir holds a special place in Melbourne’s history as our oldest reservoir. Built in 1857, it has been a vital source of water for generations, receiving water from catchments north of Melbourne and supplying the northern suburbs, from Morang to Whittlesea. Today, Yan Yean continues to play a strategic role in meeting the growing water demands of Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs. That's why at Melbourne Water, we’ve completed a major upgrade to the Yan Yean water treatment plant, enabling it to supply up to 40 million litres of fresh drinking water per day. In addition, a new 20-kilometer pipeline and pumping station now connects the plant to the Bald Hill Service Reservoir at Kalkallo. This upgrade improves supply reliability for the northern suburbs and creates capacity to transfer more water to the western suburbs. 🎥 Watch the video to explore the rich history of this special reservoir and the critical role it still plays today. #YanYeanReservoir #WaterSupply #MelbourneWater
