Celebrating a Major Milestone at Hester Hornbrook Academy! 🎓 Last week, we had the honour of welcoming Natalie Suleyman MP, Victorian Minister for Youth, to our graduation ceremony. Her presence highlights the critical role government support plays in initiatives like the Living Learning Program, which is empowering young people across Victoria to reengage with education. The 2024 graduating class is a testament to the resilience and determination of our students, who are not just receiving certificates but overcoming significant challenges to build brighter futures. Many of these graduates participated in MCM’s Living Learning Program, a groundbreaking initiative combining mental health and education. 75% of Living Learning students have improved their literacy and numeracy skills, empowering them to pursue further education or training. In addition to its remarkable student outcomes, the program recently celebrated a $3.6 million funding boost from the Victorian Government. MCM would like to thank our government partners - Department of Treasury and Finance, Victoria and Victorian Department of Families, Fairness & Housing and philanthropic investors - Gandel Foundation, Paul Ramsay Foundation, Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation, The Ross Trust, Helen Macpherson Smith Trust for their continued investment in this life-changing work. Melbourne City Mission’s Amplify Pilot—the first dedicated family violence case management program for unaccompanied young people in Australia—is delivering groundbreaking outcomes. Conducted by RMIT’s Centre for Innovative Justice, the interim evaluation shows Amplify is filling critical gaps in the system and achieving better safety, education, legal, and financial outcomes for vulnerable young Victorians. Safety: - 80% of participants supported to leave violent situations - 97% have not entered new violent relationships or returned to violent households Education: - 25% supported to stay in school and 25% supported to re-engage with education Legal Assistance: - Over 30% supported to access Family Violence Intervention Orders and family law orders Financial Safety: - Nearly 60% accessed Family Support Packages - 60% received Centrelink’s Unreasonable to Live at Home Allowance Conor Pall Survivor of family violence and member of the Amplify Pilot program said when he reached out for support at 16 there was nowhere to go. “The system hasn’t been designed with us in mind...the system relies on the children having a protective parent and we know that is not the case for so many children and young people.” “There isn’t a dedicated service for children and young people, until the Amplify pilot was rolled out.” MCM CEO Vicki Sutton describes Amplify as the missing piece for young people experiencing family violence and homelessness: “We hoped it would help bridge the gap for these young people, but it’s surpassed our expectations. Amplify is saving lives and transforming futures.” Funding for Amplify ends in June 2025. To ensure every young person has their basic right to safety, we are calling for the Amplify model to be expanded across Victoria and nationally.
