New Menzies Research Centre analysis of higher education student data reveals that international students comprise over half of all students in at least one course level across seven different fields of study, and more than three quarters of students in some postgraduate fields. An extraordinary 40 per cent of students commencing in 2023 were international students, bringing the total proportion of international students to 33 per cent. The numbers are likely to be even higher at the Group of Eight universities and other universities in major cities These figures are further evidence of how our universities have become so focused on chasing international student revenue that they are neglecting their core mission of delivering a high quality education to Australian domestic students. This is exactly why the Menzies Research Centre believes international student caps should be set as a proportion of student commencements at the course level. This would remove the need to complex, opaque calculations and ensure that educational quality for domestic students is the primary focus of universities in all courses offered.
