We research, develop and advocate policy for a free, just and prosperous Australia.

About us

The Menzies Research Centre is a think tank. We conduct research and campaigns, publish books and host events that advocate and celebrate the institutions that have made Australia one of the most free and prosperous nations in the world. We adhere to the principles of freedom, individual rights and enterprise espoused by Robert Menzies on founding the Liberal Party. Through our research, we seek good governance for all Australians, which encourages independence, innovation and reward for effort while maintaining the institutions of family and community. While the most progressive and prosperous society is one propelled by individual effort, the happiest society is one that also rallies around common values and mutual obligations. We owe those who helped build this great nation to pass it and its enormous fortune on to future generations.

New Menzies Research Centre analysis of higher education student data reveals that international students comprise over half of all students in at least one course level across seven different fields of study, and more than three quarters of students in some postgraduate fields. An extraordinary 40 per cent of students commencing in 2023 were international students, bringing the total proportion of international students to 33 per cent. The numbers are likely to be even higher at the Group of Eight universities and other universities in major cities These figures are further evidence of how our universities have become so focused on chasing international student revenue that they are neglecting their core mission of delivering a high quality education to Australian domestic students. This is exactly why the Menzies Research Centre believes international student caps should be set as a proportion of student commencements at the course level. This would remove the need to complex, opaque calculations and ensure that educational quality for domestic students is the primary focus of universities in all courses offered. Australia has the highest proportion of international students of any large developed country. In 2019, 28.4 per cent of tertiary students in Australia were international students, almost three times the OECD average of 10.1 per cent. Amidst the debate surrounding a potential cap on international student numbers in this country, the Menzies Research Centre has released a new report calling for the Government to place a permanent cap on international students so that no more than 25 per cent of students in any course are overseas students. Australia has become the world's second-largest forum for class-action litigation. Last financial year, more than $1 billion in class-action settlements were approved. In the last five years, the Australian Litigation Funding Industry has grown faster than most comparable sectors with revenue now in excess of $200 million a year. These profits are derived out of the pockets of victims who have been awarded damages. Australian household electricity prices grew faster than France, Germany, Japan, Spain, the UK and the US between 2010 and 2021, according to a new Menzies Research Centre report. Our report shows that in the 30 years to 2010 Australia had some of the cheapest power prices in the world, but around 2007 they began to rise, never to recover. The data is a wake-up call to a country facing increased power bills in the years ahead. Read our latest report here ➡ https://lnkd.in/ghhsY2JG David Hughes Geoff Bongers
