“The most powerful person in the world is the storyteller,” Steve Jobs, Co-Founder of Apple, once told Pixar executives. “The storyteller sets the vision, values, and agenda of an entire generation that is to come.”
Does how we portray country Australia - whether that’s film, TV or in the media actually matter? If you’re like me and been swept up in the recent Netflix drama series, "Territory" or doco series, "Last Stop Larimah"… You might be wondering if these rural dystopias are how the rest of the world sees us? Now don’t get me wrong, "Territory" is fantastic to watch. But as someone who lives on a farm, I couldn’t help thinking … wow there are a lot of business deals being done with guns. Which is certainly not my experience of farming life. I’ve been chatting to other farmers about this - and there has long been a concern about the lack of accuracy or just the simplicity of how they are portrayed. A study by the National Farmers' Federation found 76 percent of farmers feel undervalued by the Australian public. So is there any correlation between the media and cultural tepresentations - and how farmers are feeling? Do we need to think more deeply about the stories we tell about rural Australia… or is film and TV firmly in the land of make believe and adventure… where a good show is nothing more than just a fun ride? Thank you to my guests on the Conversation Hour on ABC Radio Melbourne for looking at this topic from every angle: *Warren Davies Davies- a farmer based In Kyabram - probably better known as the unbreakable farmer. *Leila McDougall - producer, writer and actor for Just a Farmer movie *Ed Gannon - Former editor of the Weekly Times and director of Media Means. *Giles Hardie - ABC Film and TV critic, who is based in Kempsey NSW *Alison Kennedy - Director, National Centre for Farmer Health https://lnkd.in/gsP7Ra-n
