Fugitive #methane emissions could rise in the next decade, while reducing them makes a lot of economic sense. There's no time to waste to act, as #Australia is lagging the US, China and EU. IEEFA Asia Pacific's Anne-Louise Knight, Joshua Runciman, Andrew Gorringe and I look at the economic case for reducing fugitive methane emissions from #coal, oil and #gas in Australia and found that: 📈 While CO2 emissions are expected to halve in the next 10 years, methane is expected to stay flat. IEEFA even thinks methane emissions could increase because 1) metallurgical coal is a lot more emissions intensive than thermal coal and expected to represent a growing share of production 2) mines are getting deeper and therefore more emissions intensive 3) suspected underreporting could be corrected leading to increases in emissions. 🔺 This means methane is jeopardising Australia’s emissions reduction targets; it is expected to account for 68%-95% of Australia’s targeted emissions by 2035, 78% of New South Wales’ and even exceed Queensland’s. 📉 Australia could abate two-thirds of its #fossilfuel methane emissions using readily available technologies, at a net cost of about A$1 per tonne of coal in coalmining (less than 0.5% of revenues), and at a net financial benefit in the gas sector due to the option to sell the methane captured. 💸 About 76PJ of methane could be recovered each year – more than twice the amount of gas anticipated to be required for power generation in the National Electricity Market in 2025. This represents a lost value of about A$933 million. 📕 Current policies are ineffective at reducing methane emissions, primarily due to inadequate measurement and settings in the Safeguard Mechanism, with insufficient financial incentives for companies to act. Federal and state governments must act urgently to address the problem, by enhancing financial drivers and regulating for companies to take best-practice methane abatement action. 🌐 Australia is lagging other countries on this: the US has implemented a high methane tax, has a successful program of abandonned mines methane capture, and is looking at mandating advanced leak management practices; in gas pipelines; China already has 13 operating VAM capture projects in underground coal mines and is looking at mandating it; EU's carbon price is driving methane drainage in coal mines, especially in Germany. 👇 Find out more here: Full report: https://lnkd.in/gmJwB88i Slides: https://lnkd.in/gPW6QGJc Factsheet: https://lnkd.in/gCRkcVnU

We are also interested in developing research programs that combine our environmental technical knowledge with the leadership experience of the Leading for High Reliability Centre to shed light on how environmental regulation can be continuously improved to achieve its intended goals. With the increased focus on critical mineral extraction to support decarbonisation strategies, and the challenges raised by a changing climate, we think there is a need to adapt and improve regulatory frameworks.
We’re reading reports of mines being fined for non-compliance with their environmental obligations more often in the news, and many imply there is some level of confusion between various approval documents and their status. At SMI, supporting compliance activities is something we take seriously. The Achieving Environmental Effectiveness Masterclass shows that there are many opportunities to demonstrate environmental leadership, often without too much effort, but it requires a consensual belief that it is important work and is embedded as a shared sense of purpose. The Masterclass is based on the Queensland legislative framework but can easily be modified for other mining regions – more information on the website: https://lnkd.in/gnbpqmEv Beyond compliance, the Leading for High Reliability Centre at UQ can assist mining companies with understanding the factors that contribute to greater environmental reliability: https://smi.uq.edu.au/lhrc #mining #environment #sustainability #environmentalmanagement #HRO #leadership

Our algae samples came back negative for HABs in spite of high nutrient levels and stratification, so it's encouraging further evidence that algal blooms won't be an issue with this lake's legacy. We are keen to undertake more of these assessments. Feel free to get in touch if you think we can assist!
We're pretty sure this is another world first. While drone sampling of pit lakes, often just surface waters and therefore often unrepresentative of the actual lake) is not new to pit lake monitoring, sampling of biological parameters has not been made. We've changed that. On two recent projects we sampled both phytoplankton and zooplankton using drones; over 1/4 km away from the operator. These two communities for the basis of a pit lakes ecosystem and define how contaminants will move through, and might be bioaccumulated, in the pit lake. Understanding populations of algae and zooplankton grazers also tells us how the pit lake might present as a viable post mining land use (PMLU) for wildlife habitat or a sustainable traditional/sports fishery. And also, of the risks of high nutrients in pit lake water quality developing into hazardous algal blooms (HABs) of cynanobacteria. Most importantly, understanding these small lifeforms tells us a lot about how problematic pit lake water quality might be, side from application of default water quality guidelines developed for natural ecosystems. #minelakesconsulting #pitlakes #waterquality #drones #mineclosure

What is Nature Positive and why is it an important topic at COP16? 🌿 Nature Positive is defined as: 📈Measurable net-positive biodiversity outcomes 🌍Improvement in the abundance of nature 🦋Greater diversity, integrity and resilience of species 🤝Nature is better able to contribute to human wellbeing As negotiations kick off at COP16 in Colombia today, we’re calling for accelerated action to deliver the mission of the Global Biodiversity Framework. We need to see concrete actions agreed and acted on to achieve a nature-positive world by 2030. We’re hosting several events at COP16. In my lifetime humans have destroyed over 70% of the world's biodiversity - we are responsible for climate change, habitat loss, pollution, over exploitation & overfishing. We haven’t ’lost it’ - we have killed it. Our current trajectory is unsustainable. Our politicians must act now. COP16 Colombia Oceana Oceana UK https://lnkd.in/e2iC85Jz
