Ephraim and Harmoniche "Niche": Some Keys to Successful Mentorship
Let me celebrate a mentee, Niche, and how he embodies the benefits of mentorship. I'd also use this post to present some keys to successful mentorship (from my viewpoint as a mentor).
SHOWING-UP (not showing-off)
LiME (Leadership in Motion and Experience) was a youth development and leadership program (12-17 years) which I founded and led from 2018 to 2021. Niche was not part of the originally selected group of youth. He came along with a friend to one of the early sessions, saw the value, joined right away, and kept showing up all through the years i.e. LiME 1, LiME 2, and LIME 3. He was intentional about his involvement, he attended consistently, he took initiative where necessary, and accepted challenges with guidance.
TAKING INITIATIVE
Niche immersed himself into the regular LiME program including the Gavel communication stream, adopted from Toastmasters International. He also took initiatives and seized opportunities. Here are a few of them: Niche accepted the challenge to speak at my book launch 2019, he did excellently well! I asked him to write the forewords for one of my other books, he did, and that was impressive. Glenn P.W Dewhurst, then Mayor of City of Gosnells (CoG) listened to Niche as a LiME event guest. Later on, Glenn formally invited Niche to deliver a keynote speech at an annual CoG event with dignitaries and MPs at Federal, State and LG levels in attendance. Niche made me and Glenn look so good on the day with his well planned and delivered address.
HONOURING
Niche has honoured me on many occasions. The value is not so much the honour in itself, but the weight he places in the mentorship. I'll present a few examples of the episodes of honour, here. He invited me to be his special guest during his National Chess competition. He readily promotes LiME program before his peers, teachers and principal during his High School days. He invited me to afternoon tea with his family, in their home, that was special. Not to mention gifts of appreciation given to me at different occasions. Just recently, I received a message from Niche asking to catch-up (he was back home from The Australian National University (ANU) for Christmas / New Year break). I made room for the catch-up, my busy my schedule didn't matter as much. Honour is a high-weight currency!
I am glad that Niche is aware that there's still much to learn. I pray he remains teachable while he keeps showing up where necessary, taking initiatives in seizing opportunities, and maintaining his honouring heart. His success will continue to grow.
