"As a nation we’re not thinking enough about how we increase productivity. Getting this right is our greatest opportunity. Australia is indeed the lucky country. Pleasingly, customer scam losses have decreased 20% year-on-year, despite customer scam reports increasing 18%. We can, and will, do more. Scams often start via a social media post, sponsored search result, text message or phone call. Tourists have helped boost the fortunes of small businesses in Australia’s holiday hotspots over the summer break. NAB merchant terminal data reveals spending at tourism businesses like accommodation, restaurants, bars, cafes, and even service stations, was significantly higher over the Christmas and New Year break. Spending on accommodation in Robe was 700% higher than normal, in Lakes Entrance it was 478% higher and in Burleigh Heads it was 226% higher. Restaurants and bars were popular in Jervis Bay (+300%), Merimbula (+217%) and Rye (271%). Higher spending at service stations including Victor Harbor (+536%), Kingscote (+57%) and St Helens (127%) points to Australians embracing a road trip. NAB Business Direct and Small Business executive Krissie Jones said: “The population of holiday hotspots swells over summer and while most of us are relaxing on our summer holidays, business owners are making the most of this surge in tourism numbers, which translates into higher spending and, in turn, supports the local economy.” You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/gK5PHAcX

In his economic outlook for 2025, NAB Group CEO Andrew Irvine shared his optimism the tide would start to turn, with measured growth for the year ahead predicted.
