The peak association for public works professionals in ANZ, offering industry-leading training, events and resources.

About us

The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) is the professional organisation providing member services and advocacy for those involved in and delivering public works and engineering services to the community both in Australia and New Zealand. Increasingly, engineers are working as part of multi-disciplinary teams, rather than working within traditional departments. Public works and services for all levels of government are being provided increasingly by consultants, contractors, suppliers of goods, services and machinery as well as those directly employed by government. Membership criteria for IPWEA has changed from an emphasis on engineering qualifications and position within council, to criteria based on what people do in their jobs. Members come from the wide range of professions involved in public works and services - engineers, asset managers, technicians, public works directors, parks managers, fleet managers, contractors, consultants, and managers.

To close out our international keynote speakers this morning, we heard from Emmanuel Ngcobo, Chairperson of the Chartered Institute of Government Finance (CIGFARO), South Africa. Emmanuel further elaborated on a key theme at Congress - collaboration. In a practical sense, this means the integration and creation of a common vision, purpose, and strategy across government. Ensuring that all members of council are working together towards deliberate, shared objectives for the betterment of our infrastructure, and in turn our nations. #IAMC24

Day 2 at Congress kicked off with an address from Senator Bridget McKenzie! The Senator reiterated a key point of our profession - that we don’t build the infrastructure for its own sake. Rather, it’s a people orientated career, and we build infrastructure for the quality of life for our people. As we look towards the new year, there’s an important role for asset managers in driving data-based decision making to continue to shape the future of infrastructure in our nation and enhance the experience of people in our communities.
