The National Indigenous Australians Agency has won the 2024 Australian HR Institute (AHRI) Award for Best Learning and Development Strategy! NIAA received the award in recognition of the Footprints Framework. This unique approach to cultural learning is embedded into performance plans across all levels of the Agency. NIAA was chosen from among a highly competitive field of finalists, making it a significant achievement for the Agency and for the People Branch. This award is a testament to NIAA's commitment to creating a supportive, inclusive, and culturally safe workplace.

Calling all First Nations community members and organisations with an interest in Indigenous rangers! We want your help to design Round 2 of the expanded Indigenous Rangers Program. With more than 1,000 new Indigenous ranger jobs, the first round of the Indigenous Rangers Program expansion has been a huge success. We’re opening another grant round in 2025, working towards delivering over 800 new ranger jobs across the country. Applications for the latest SES100 Band 1 and Band 2, Round 2 are now open. The SES100 initiative supports the government’s commitment to boost First Nations employment across the Australian Public Service. In 2022, 44 First Nations people worked in Senior Executive Service (SES) roles. That number has almost doubled in the two years since, largely due to the success of the program’s first round. The growth reflects significant progress toward the Australian Government’s target of having 100 First Nations leaders into senior APS positions by 2024-25. The initiative also includes wrap around supports delivered in a culturally safe manner, as well as professional development pathways to successful applicants. The Yawarra program for SES officers provides tailored coaching, mentoring, and leadership training to ensure long-term success in their roles in the public service. A joint partnership between the National Indigenous Australians Agency and Australian Public Service Commission, this initiative is now accepting applications for SES100 Round 2. Indigenous people from the media sector came together last week on Ngunnawal/Ngambri country (Canberra) for First Nations Media Australia’s (FNMA) annual Converge conference. The 2024 conference was themed: 'Meeting Together, One Direction – Nguluway – Yanhanhagu Dhulu Ngumbaay'. Participants heard from a range of community, government and industry speakers. A digital inclusion forum on day one also provided an opportunity to discuss the benefits and accessibility challenges of digital connectivity for Indigenous peoples and communities. #Converge2024 closed with the 2024 FNMA Awards, which celebrated some of the best and brightest in First Nations Media. The Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Emerging Leaders met with First Nations leaders in the public service on Ngunnawal Country, Canberra, on 17 October to share their experiences and perspectives on leadership. “Seeing like-minded people, hearing their stories, how they got to a point like this makes me want to push myself also to maybe get into roles like this,” said Selwyn Burton, from Amata in South Australia. “It’s pretty privileged to be out here learning from many people from around the country, learning from their stories.” Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gBvFQgKF

Senior executives from across the public sector play an important part in the Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme by delivering Personal Acknowledgements to eligible Stolen Generations survivors. Through a Personal Acknowledgement, a survivor can have their story about removal and the impact it has had on them acknowledged by a senior government person,and receive a personalised and genuine acknowledgement of the resulting harm and trauma. Gary Rake, CEO of the Australian Building Codes Board, told a recent gathering that being a senior government representative has been a powerful and important experience, with lessons for his leadership approach in the public sector. 🎉 We won! 🎉 The Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data has won the APS Data Awards in the Diversity and Inclusion in Data category! Co-designed with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partners, the Framework seeks to empower First Nations Australians with greater control over government-held Indigenous data – across the entire data lifecycle. The judges recognised the Framework for its exemplary co-design approach, fostering systemic inclusiveness and amplifying Indigenous representation and diversity within government data frameworks. The collaborative process was noteworthy and aligned strongly with the goals of this award! The CEO of the National Indigenous Australians Agency, Jody Broun, was honoured this week as the recipient of the Community and Impact Alumni Award at Edith Cowan University's 2024 Alumni Awards. The award recognised Jody’s service to Indigenous communities. After graduating in teaching from Edith Cowan University in the 1980s, she has built a career dedicated to ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are heard, recognised and empowered - all while maintaining a strong personal connection to Country. Jody is also an award-winning artist and is renowned as one of the great chroniclers of Australia's red centre. Her works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally, in Japan, Italy, the UK and other locations. Congratulations, Jody!
