We believe that everyone, regardless of their background deserves access to clear and accurate health information and our health teams are dedicated to empowering our culturally and linguistically diverse communities through education and engagement. Associate Professor Dr Habib Bhurawala recently did just that when he joined the SBS Hindi podcast to provide summer care advice for young children. During the program he emphasised practical tips for hydration, appropriate clothing, and the use of well-ventilated spaces and also discussed guidance for families travelling to regions with contrasting climates, offering actionable advice to keep children safe, healthy, and comfortable. A new dedicated Education and Training Centre is coming to Nepean Hospital as part of its Stage 2 redevelopment. The state-of-the-art facility will feature simulation spaces, training rooms, and advanced technology to upskill and support the District’s 7,000 strong workforce. New simulation spaces will have 8 ward beds and 2 critical care beds, to train technical and non-technical skills from communication to advanced life support. Nicole McGreal, Education and Training Manager for Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District says the simulations spaces can help diagnose the need for change as well as develop and test new processes that can be embedded in health care to improve patient outcomes. “The new facilities will enable us to program real life scenarios for staff to respond to, such as patients undergoing a heart attack, airway obstruction and loss of consciousness.” “The simulation space is a significant improvement and gives staff a way to practice skills, assess their competence, and build their confidence, which will ultimately benefit patients,” Nicole continues. By providing top-notch training and development opportunities, we’re committed to attracting and retaining the best talent in health care. Jenny Steadman, a local in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District recently hosted a TEDx talk about breaking the silence around sexual assault. In this powerful and deeply personal TEDx talk, Jenny says everyone has a role to play in ending the silence around sexual violence. Drawing from both research and her own lived experience, Jenny shines a light on the societal silence, stigma, and discomfort that keep this topic hidden in the shadows. Take a look. #16daysofactivism #sexualassault #traumainformedcare #IVPRS

Meet Linda, a passionate advocate for disability inclusion, who brings a wealth of experience and empathy to her role as Specialist Intellectual Disability Clinician. With a background in acute care nursing and a deep personal connection to disability, Linda has dedicated her career to improving the lives of people with disabilities. Her lived experience as a parent gives her a unique perspective on the importance of inclusive and accessible health care. "As clinicians, we work under the assumption that we can communicate effectively and understand the needs of others. However, we’ve found that health staff skills vary in different communication styles and how to adjust to meet the needs of the person with disability. For example, a person with intellectual disability, being unable to communicate their needs may result in frustration and ‘unsociable’ behaviour," says Linda. Linda envisions a future where disability inclusion is a fundamental principle of health care at NBMLHD. "Health care for everyone, especially those with a disability needs to be person-centred with strategies to navigate how to change and implement adjustment to everyday practice." “Equitable services and integrating disability inclusiveness can achieve a meaningful understanding of how to support rather than manage people with disabilities,” says Linda. Linda's work is a testament to the power of compassion and advocacy. Her commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities inspires us all to strive for a more inclusive future. #IDPwD #InternationalDayofPeoplewithDisability #inclusion #disability

It’s a hive of activity at the Nepean Hospital redevelopment site with a second crane really cranking up construction of our Stage 2 building. It wasn’t too long ago that we had our first concrete pour, and with two cranes things will start to move more rapidly as they handle construction materials and manoeuvre steel. The second crane is about 100 metres tall and will stick around onsite until the concrete structure of the building reaches the seventh storey. We’re really looking forward to seeing the building rise from the ground and connect with our Stage 1 building. Once Stage 2 is complete it will truly deliver contemporary and expanded hospital services for our Penrith and Blue Mountains communities. #health #construction #worldclass #innovation Health Infrastructure Turner & Townsend CPB Contractors
