May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, a good time to reflect on what we can each do to stop this from happening to people we know.

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month is an annual community initiative held in Queensland each May. The aim is to raise awareness and understanding of domestic and family violence and coercive control in our communities. This year all Australians are being called on to reaffirm their commitment to challenge the harmful attitudes and behaviours that allow disrespect toward women and gender inequality to endure in our communities. It is our responsibility to change the culture that enables domestic and family violence to continue and take action to create a safer Australia for all. It's in our control to end coercive control. A highlight this week was spending time with June MacDonald, President of Neighbourhood Watch Armadale and Jenny O’Brien State Coordinator, Neighbourhood Watch WA. It was lovely spending time with June and Jenny at the community Home Security Information Session, and later sitting in on one of their podcasts. It was an honour and a privilege to attend Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young, Governor of Queensland's Annual International Women's Day Garden Reception, and to be able to share the experience with Amanda Draheim, Area Coordinator of Riverview Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) and Lydia Teekens assistant NHW Area Coordinator and minutes secretary. Amanda is the Ipswich City Council Australia Day Awards Citizen of the Year. Congratulations Amanda – a truly well deserved award and recognition of all the amazing work you do with Neighbourhood Watch in the Riverview and Ipswich communities. Lydia is another incredible young achiever in the making.
