NESMA member RMS Manufacturing says it has never been more important than now for customers to be informed about why Australian manufacturing, safety, and compliance with local Standards is critical. “Customers need open communication about the false value of being sucked into a race to the bottom on quality and price for non-compliant technologies. What value is a cheap non-compliant switchboard that will have to be upgraded or replaced at least, and possibly attract penalties for shortcomings that compromise on safety and compliance,” says Mina Shehata, Managing Director of RMS Manufacturing in Western Melbourne, who is strongly active in NESMA Victoria including as a member of the NESMA technical committee. For anyone wanting to refer back to this year's NESMA Adelaide Industry Seminar, a video is now online. The video includes full presentations by: ✔️ Jeff Davis, Chair of Committee, EL-006 Industrial Controlgear and Switchgear. Jeff covered AS61439, both present and future, as well as placing a particular focus on arc fault management. ✔️ David Webb, NESMA Victoria President, and active member of the standards committee for EL1-AS3000. David's presentation focused on removing any confusion or misunderstandings around the AS/NZS 3439 and AS/NZS 61439. The AS/NZS 61439 series is mandated in AS/NZS 61439 and due consideration must be placed on the User Guide SA/SNZ TR 61439.0. INDUSTRY INSIGHT: DATA CENTRES NESMA NSW President Scott Emerson from Controlling Power provides some insights into the exponential growth of data centres in Australia, and how this is focusing switchboard manufacturers on the need to prepare to meet these facilities’ uniquely different needs. “As with many switchgear markets, data centre switchgear plays a vital role in ensuring uninterrupted power supply, load balancing, fault protection, and overall operational stability of the data centre environment,” says Scott. NESMA member GSTEC (Building Intelligence | Power Solutions)'s apprentice rotation is equipping the next generation of skilled tradespeople. Through a wider rotation than they would typically experience, apprentices are learning additional skills and experiences for the future. “As well as the electrical installation components of their apprenticeship, we train our apprentices in a wide range of aspects of the business, including commissioning, engineering, and estimating as well as the all-important end-to-end switchboard assembly process,” says Laryn Zabakly, Switchboard Production Manager, GSTEC – an Australian assembler based in Marrickville, NSW. GSTEC Director, Doug McMillan, adds, “Through NESMA, we’re kept informed of the latest changes in the industry. This means when we speak to customers or contractors, we have the credibility of being backed by knowledge from the professional and trusted NESMA organisation, and this is highly valuable to us." “For apprentice programmes, and any aspect of our business, we can speak with other knowledgeable, skilled Australian manufacturers and assemblers that are part of the NESMA network, learn from their experience, and make valuable connections,” he says. Road transport electrification is set to have a huge impact on NESMA members. In an exclusive article for NESMA, Electric Vehicle Council Head of Energy and Infrastructure, Ross De Rango discusses the switchboard manufacturing industry’s awareness of the challenges and opportunities arising from EVs. Ross says the impact of demand from industrial and commercial transport, and of public high power charging, will have a profound impact on the switchboard and broader technologies produced by NESMA members to meet State and Federal government targets to increase EV sales to more than 50 per cent by 2030–31 and help achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
