Collie has powered Western Australia for decades, through coal mining and coal-fired power stations. As the country transitions to #renewableenergy, planning is underway for Collie’s two state-owned power stations to be retired over the next 5 years. The Net Zero Economy Authority is working with regional communities to help them harness the opportunities presented by net zero, ensuring we all share the benefits of the economic transformation. In doing so, our team will be visiting and engaging with priority regions across the country. Last month, team members from the Authority, The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, and the Collie Delivery Unit met with groups from the local community. This included presenting at a meeting of the Collie Just Transition Working Group who have already done a huge amount of work setting the region up for success and steering the transition in Collie. The team also met with South Regional TAFE, Collie Jobs and Skills Centre, Shire of Collie Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance (AUSMASA) and First Nations representatives to better understand what supports are needed in the region throughout the transition. Our team will continue to visit and engage with the Collie community, so we can support those affected by the closures prepare for the future and participate in new economic opportunities. FPR Energy's Concentrated Solar Thermal technology marks a step forward in reducing industrial emissions. ☀🌏 📢 The new venture from CSIRO has secured $15 million in seed funding. FPR Energy is driving clean energy solutions to tackle emissions from hard-to-abate sectors like minerals refining, steel, cement, and chemical production. The CSIRO’s particle-based Concentrated Solar Thermal technology uses abundant and low-cost ceramic particles to store sunlight as heat. This allows for long-duration energy storage to support industrial processes, green fuel production and dispatchable power. “Helping heavy industries to transition to cleaner energy sources is essential to reaching Australia’s net-zero emission targets,” said Dr Daniel Roberts, CSIRO Energy Technologies Research Director. FPR Energy is a new venture co-founded by CSIRO, RFC Ambrian and Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. Based at CSIRO’s Energy Centre in #Newcastle, FPR Energy is built on CSIRO’s particle receiver technology research program, developed through the Australian Solar Thermal Research Institute, with support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). FPR Energy plans to expand the technology to other high-solar regions worldwide, including North and South America, the Middle East and Africa. 📢 Future Made in Australia Announcement The Australian Government has pressed go on the Future Made in Australia (Guarantee of Origin) Bill 2024 and its two supporting bills. Passed on 28 November 2024, the bills establish the voluntary Guarantee of Origin (GO) scheme. It is a certification scheme designed to authenticate low-emissions products and support renewable electricity. This will help #Australian producers remain competitive in new and emerging markets. Moving forward and through the scheme, Australian producers will be able to credibly present and account for the low-emissions reality of their products. "Our $22.7 billion commitment to a Future Made in Australia package will help Australia unlock private investment at scale in #netzero industries including renewable hydrogen," said the Hon. Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate, Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. "We're making sure Australians will benefit now from the opportunities afforded by the emerging net zero industries. We passed legislation to establish the Net Zero Economy Authority so that #regions, #workers and #communities are supported to manage the impacts and share in the benefits of this transition." "By building the industrial capability to solve national challenges – like the transition to net zero – we will create secure and meaningful jobs in our regional communities as power stations close and industries change," said Senator Tim Ayres, Assistant Minister for a Future Made in Australia. “The establishment of the Net Zero Economy Authority and the Australian Government's Future Made in Australia plan provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen our regional centres." Across Australia, governments, businesses and communities are working together to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The Authority is responsible for ensuring that Australia’s regions and workers are supported through, and benefit from, the transition to a net zero emissions economy. Central Queensland has always been a place where things are made and exported to the world – a proud economic powerhouse that’s home to essential #infrastructure and skilled #workers. ⚙🛠 Recently, the Net Zero Economy Agency visited Gladstone to support the #BringingNewEnergy campaign. This included attending a culturally and linguistically diverse community dinner organised by Integreat Queensland and a business breakfast facilitated by the Gladstone Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The events saw engagement and involvement from community members and businesses across the region. Rachel Livingston GAICD, our First Assistant Secretary, Regions and Workers Division presented on the work of the agency, promoting orderly and positive economic transformation. We are engaging with a variety of stakeholders to support a positive transition to net zero, including First Nations groups education and training groups, industry, investors, regional bodies, communities and government. Coordination across all levels of government, industry and community is essential to help Central Queensland manage this economic change and ensure the transition delivers long-term resilience and benefits. Paul Hodgson also talked about the work CQUniversity is doing to support the region with training, education and resources for the community.
