At the moment, our mission to make slavery obsolete concentrates on the nation of Pakistan. Interestingly, the Asia Pacific region has an estimated 29.3 million people in slavery. That's over 58% of the world's slaves on Australia's back door. #MakingSlaveryObsolete #NewRivers #AsiaPacificRegion #ModernSlavery
50 million people are living in modern slavery globally. The Asia Pacific region harbours a harsh reality – the highest number is estimated at almost 30 million. From migrant workers experiencing forced labour in global supply chains to those who are trafficked and forced to work in scamming centres in Southeast Asia. Modern slavery risks can look very different in each country. The one thing they all have in common is that their freedom is taken away. They are trapped in a situation of exploitation that they cannot escape.

Australia has begun the recruitment process for our first Anti-slavery Commissioner. As the search continues, we are not completely certain that the role of this Commissioner will have enough bite to make a real impact in making slavery obsolete. We recommend reading this article from Fiona David, the founder and CEO of Fair Futures --> https://lnkd.in/eRk43niz #MakingSlaveryObsolete #NewRivers #AntiSlaveryCommissioner #RealImpact
