  • The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) reported in early 2024 that there were 60,572 registered charities in Australia. The number increases each year. Of the ‘extra small’ charities (31% of the number of Australian charities) nearly 90% of them operate without paid staff. The ‘Small charities’ making between $50,00 and $250,000 per year constitute 21% of the number of charities. At the other end of the scale are the very large charities that in number represent 4.4% of Australia’s charity sector, and a few extra large influential charities representing just 0.5%. • In 1986, salary-sacrificing benefits gave not-for-profits (NFPs) a competitive edge in attracting staff. Nearly 40 years later, while living costs and wages have increased, these caps have barely changed. What was once a powerful tool has become outdated, leaving NFPs struggling to compete with the commercial sector for top talent. Without government reform, this system will continue to hinder the sector’s potential. It’s time to modernise salary-sacrificing benefits and give NFPs the support they need to thrive. #NotForProfit #CharitySector #SalarySacrificing #Reform Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gk9m6Hmn

  • A paper from the Productivity Commission highlighted that small charities are the most common in Australia, but many are stretched and are reliant on philanthropic giving. The report found that among the 60,000 plus registered charities in Australia, over half of all charities operate without paid staff. On average, charities with revenue under $250,000 receive 40% of their total revenue from donations, as opposed to grants or selling goods and services.
