🍪 Cooking for a Cause 🍪 This week, students from Toolooa State High School were engaged in school-based volunteering, where they prepared baked goods for Evenglow's fortnightly social connection events. 🎂 The students were guided by a professional cake decorator and baker, who volunteered her time for this project. Next week, they will be baking more goods for Softly Helping You. 🍰 The aim of the ‘Cooking for a Cause’ program is to engage students in volunteering and help develop and improve their social and emotional skills and build their self-confidence. 😊 🌟 Evenglow were extremely appreciative of the delicious scones and were thrilled to know that high school students baked them! 👏 🥐 NRG Gladstone Operating Services donated $500 towards the ‘Cooking for a Cause’ program! 🙌 #schoolbasedvolunteering #volunteering #gladstoneregion

Over the past four months, two students from Carinity Education have been volunteering at Gladstone Community Linking Agency’s Port Curtis Respite Centre. This volunteering opportunity has been initiated through the Next Generation Volunteering (Next Gen Vol) pilot program by NFP House. The program has been a positive experience for all involved.  Special relationships have been formed and teachers have reported improved school attendance and personal growth for the students.  The elderly clients are more involved in the activities in the centre and students are now considering career pathways related to aged care and community services.   Comments from the students include: "This is the highlight of my week!" "I'm doing something to help people and it has opened my eyes to new things." "It has changed my perspective of older people. The opportunity to talk and have conversations makes you realise they are just like us, just old and wrinkly."
