The discovery of gold in Stawell in 1853 marked the beginning of a significant chapter in Victorian gold mining history. By the late 1850s, several mining operations, including the Darlington Mine on NSM’s tenements, were mining the quartz reefs known for their substantial gold endowments. However, smaller mines struggled to manage the conditions, and the miners (and investors) often gave up before the gold did! Previously reported air core drilling at the Caledonia Prospect provided increased understanding of this promising target, which most recent interpretation places at the far northern end of the ~10km long Browns-Darlington-Caledonia basalt trend in the highly gold-prospective eastern Stawell Corridor. The results from three lines at the Caledonia Prospect, situated to the south of NSMs discovery holes on this prospect, confirmed and extended significant gold grades above 1g/t Au, from 250m to 620m strike length. 570m south of Caledonia along the Browns trend, historic mining activity yielded grades over 15g/t Au. 800m further south on the same trend is Darlington, a priority target for drilling in January 2025. Caledonia is under <5m of unmineralised sediments (cover), more than enough cover to be blind to historic prospectors. North Stawell Mineral’s continued collaboration with CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, is pivotal in advancing its geological understanding of the Stawell Corridor under cover. The collaboration is applying machine learning to interpret the complex subsurface geological architecture, identifying patterns in NSM’s significant datasets. Such technology offers enhanced understanding of the Stawell Corridor, and will deliver new insights into the complex geology and mineralisation. The project builds on a prior collaboration, where numerical modelling of geophysics mapped the strain and stress around 3D interpretations of the mineralisation-controlling basalts – a valuable tool to focus in on possible repeats of the mine at Stawell.
