  • How do you build a future-ready school in one of NSW’s most challenging environments? Jindabyne’s sub-alpine conditions meant this project wasn’t just about construction—it was about problem-solving in real time. Working closely with Hansen Yuncken, School Infrastructure and other key stakeholders, our Civil, Structural and Sustainability teams tackled challenging weather, complex terrain and sustainability targets to help deliver a resilient, high-performance education campus. 🏗 Concrete in the Cold: Winter construction posed a challenge, especially for concrete curing. Our Structural team collaborated with Boral to develop a specialised mix and used thermal blankets to prevent freezing—keeping the project on track. 🌱 Sustainability in Action: As Green Star consultants, we helped the project achieve a 4-Star Green Star rating, refining daylight access in the final stages to ensure compliance without compromising design. 🤝 Seamless Delivery: Our on-site engineer provided close coordination with the client, council and local authorities ensuring smooth approvals for roadworks and infrastructure—because engineering is just one piece of the puzzle. • "We need to do things differently to move forward, so bring in the innovation and creativity!” was a key takeaway from the speakers at Friday’s Property Council of Australia Sustainability Outlook Breakfast 2025 which Northrop was the event partner.   The session dived into where the building and construction industry is heading in 2025 and beyond with regards to sustainability. Northrop’s Ian Van Eerden and James Sutherland were joined with Claire Bowles MSc , FRSA, Gavin Salt , Tim Nichols, Alex Sear and Krista Milne to give their views.   Northrop’s Melbourne Sustainability Associate Pamela Chacon has provided an excellent summary of the event’s other key learnings, which are: * the most sustainable building is the one you already have * planning and retrofitting are complex but necessary – we need to think laterally and talk more about these constraints * Melbourne needs to re-life 90 buildings a year to hit its climate goals (currently only seven a year are happening) * learn from mistakes and share lessons broadly, even with the competition, and * search for the hidden value and find the partners who can help get projects moving. We’d love to hear how these key learnings resonate with you. #sustainability #outlook #propertycouncil #melbourne   Photography credit: Property Council of Australia

  • Last week, we threw open the doors of our new Sydney office at 400 George St for our official office warming 🎉 From our days at 345 George to where we are now, our team has grown, our needs have evolved and to be honest—our last space was getting a little too cosy. As Isabel Duffy put it: “We loved 345 George—but with 280 people in Sydney, we had to admit we’d outgrown it. It was time to move into a space that reflects where we are now.” Now that we’ve settled into a space designed for the way we work today, it was time to celebrate with the people who have been part of our journey and will continue to shape our future. To our clients and partners—you're the reason we’re here. As Greater Sydney Leader Stephen Fryer said on the night: “We wouldn’t be here without you—our clients, collaborators and friends. You’ve been part of our journey, and we hope you feel just as at home in our new space as we do.” Once again, a huge thank you to GroupGSA, COMUNiTI, Mirvac, Scope Construction, Gray Puksand, all our project partners and countless Northrop team members for making it happen in just six months! Swipe through the gallery to relive the night. Thanks for helping us warm our new home! #Northrop #OfficeWarming #NewBeginnings

  • Steel or timber—what’s the better choice for sustainability? 🌱🏗️ In this video, our Sustainability Consultant, Sumedh Kulkarni, breaks down the key considerations around life cycle assessments, circularity and the environmental impacts of structural materials. From embodied carbon to end-of-life reuse, these factors shape how we approach sustainable design. Check it out and let us know—what factors drive your material choices? #Sustainability #LifeCycleAssessment #EngineeringForTheFuture

  • Celebrating Stephen Maher's 25 year journey at Northrop. For over two decades, Stephen has been an integral part of Northrop’s story. Joining us in 2000 after beginning his engineering career in Ireland, Stephen has led the way on some of our most complex large-scale projects across the commercial, residential, hospitality and health sectors. But Stephen’s contributions extend far beyond the projects he’s delivered. He’s built a reputation for cultivating long-term client relationships, mentoring the next generation of engineers and making a meaningful impact through initiatives like the Knowledge Water Project—a pro bono effort supporting economic development and Indigenous employment in Mandjawuy, Northern Territory. Stephen’s leadership and passion for Business Development have also been transformative. As Jamie Shelton reflects, “Fifteen years ago, it was his initiative that lit a fire under the Sydney office and led to a decade of double-digit growth. His energy and enthusiasm continue to inspire us all.”  Managing Partner Todd Halliday adds, “There’s a certain magic to Stephen’s approach. He’s a charmer, storyteller and cultural glue for Northrop. It’s been an absolute pleasure working alongside him—a true business partner.” Stephen, thank you for your leadership, mentorship and the spirit you bring to our team. Here’s to the many milestones we’ve celebrated together—and the ones still to come! #NorthropConsulting #Teamwork #BusinessDevelopment

  • Tools down, surf’s up 🤙 A few of our team spent the day at Bondi volunteering with Ocean Heroes—an incredible organisation that helps children on the autism spectrum build confidence through surfing. 🌊🏄♂️ The smiles on the kids’ faces as they caught their first waves were unforgettable (some coming from as far as Canberra!). It was a reminder that confidence isn’t just built in classrooms or at home—it’s found in experiences, in trying something new, and in the support of a community that believes in you. As Ocean Heroes' Lachlan McArthur, explains: “Volunteers are the heart of our events, making it possible to keep them completely free! Run by the community, for the community, these events empower local groups to support their own autism community.” While engineering and surfing may seem worlds apart, the core values that drive both are the same: adaptability, resilience and balance. At Northrop, we pride ourselves on designing spaces that enable communities to thrive. Volunteering with Ocean Heroes reinforced the importance of inclusive environments and positive community impact—whether in the built world or in the water. A huge thank you to Ocean Heroes for the opportunity to be part of this. • This month marks a huge milestone for Rodney Pratt and Todd Halliday: 20 years with Northrop! Back in 2005, Northrop looked a little different. We were 35 people strong in Sydney (Now over 200), with offices in Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and Central Coast, working on projects like Emerald Park – Zetland, Site 8B – Olympic Park and Wellington Correctional Centre. Technology and the industry have evolved since then, but our commitment to great engineering, our people and the relationships we build along the way have remained the same. Through two decades of change, Rod and Todd have each played a key role in shaping the company we are today. Whether it's mentoring the next generation, delivering complex projects or driving improvement in their fields, their impact has been immense. Please join us in celebrating this milestone🎉 #Northrop #Teamwork #20Years

  • Northrop Consulting Engineers is proud to sponsor ArchiSoccer, a league that has been uniting Melbourne Architects through sport for over 24 years. ⚽🏗️ “This long-standing competition brings together talented professionals who demonstrate not only exceptional design expertise but also impressive teamwork and skill on the field. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed hosting post-game networking sessions and engaging with the many talented individuals who make this league such a success," says Robert Winbank. We look forward to the rest of the season and the continued connections both on and off the pitch. #ArchiSoccer #Northrop #ProudSponsors #EngineeringPartnerships #CollaborationThroughSport #GameOn

  • Melonba Public School and Melonba High School have officially welcomed their first students! Knowing students and staff will be stepping into spacious, light-filled classrooms instead of cramped demountables, is a reminder of why we do what we do. From addressing complex civil and stormwater challenges to ensuring façade longevity and providing on-site structural engineering support for the construction team, every aspect of this project was designed with sustainability, durability and the students’ experience in mind. A 5-Star Green Building Council of Australia rated design, delivered on schedule, that’s built for the future. Proud to have played a role on the team with NBRS, Richard Crookes Constructions, Colliers and School Infrastructure in shaping a place where thousands of students will learn and grow.
