How to Do It Series 2 - Episode 8 - NTS Home Garden Range This week features a product focus, as there have been many requests for information on how and why our key products work, additionally it is a valuable showcase of value adding in your farming business. We filmed this at the wonderful organic farmers markets at Stanthorpe on Saturday mornings. This has become a buzzing little community hub each week and I love being a part of it. I have long argued that the well managed home vegetable garden is the ultimate wellness tool. Not only are you eating chemical free, nutrient-dense food and savoring the satisfaction that oozes from that enterprise, but there are other wellness enhancing benefits. These include: 1) Mental Health - we now understand that the smell of a healthy soil triggers the production of serotonin, the feel good hormone. Depression is linked to a lack of this hormone. There are very few depressed gardeners. 2) Probiotic support - a common bacillus organism (bacillus subtilis), found in healthy soil, has been shown to be a super protective probiotic. In fact, there is a whole new form of probiotic supplementation, based on this finding, called “spore biotics”. It’s a good reason to leave a little soil on that freshly plucked carrot. 3) Countering climate change - when we build organic matter in our gardens, we are sequestering carbon that would otherwise have returned to the atmosphere, as part of the carbon cycle. When you factor in the potential of every gardener on the planet sequestering carbon in this manner, you begin to realise your critically important role as a cog in that planet saving machine... Beginning your journey Often the greatest deterrent for non gardeners wanting to harvest these many benefits, is the fact that they have no experience. How to Do It Series - Episode 7 - Brewing Azotobacter This week in Episode Seven of the "How to Do It" Series Two, you will discover how to multiply azotobacter to provide super, cost effective nitrogen supplementation. This is a real breakthrough, as we have not previously been able to multiply these creatures successfully on farm. Azotobacter provide much more than a supply of free nitrogen from the atmosphere. They produce a group of B vitamins that are recognised as plant growth promotants. They amplify this plant push with significant production of key plant growth hormones, including cytokinins, gibberellins and auxins. Azotobacter are also proven phosphate solubilisers and they are major producers of the amino acids that drive many plant processes. These versatile organisms also produce polymers the most abundant of which is alginates, which improve water infiltration and retention. Azotobacter also release antibiotics which can help counter diseases like fusarium, rhizoctonia and alternaria. They produce siderophores which starve pathogens of the iron they require and they thrive in the presence of urea. This makes them a perfect complement to the foliar application of urea. In Episode Four of the “How to Do It” Series Two, we will be discovering the power of seedling treatment. On my farms, we would never plant trays of vegetable seedlings or bagged tree seedlings without applying minerals, microbes, and natural biostimulants. This is the perfect opportunity to set the plant up for a healthy, vigorous, disease-free life. Through experience, we have found that the best mineral-based biostimulant blend for this purpose is the NTS product Root and Shoot. This liquid features a broad spectrum of major and minor minerals supported and enhanced with humates, kelp, amino acids, vitamins, and plant growth promotants. This tool delivers the mineral nutrition component of a successful seedling treatment. The microbial component involves a combination of Platform and Bio-N. There is a strong argument that calcium is the most important player in high-production fertility, crop quality, and disease resistance. Calcium is required for the cell division that sponsors growth, it governs the cellular delivery of all minerals, and many underestimate this mineral's yield-building potential. Calcium is the most immobile of all minerals and this immobility is further compounded by the impact of excesses of other minerals. In fact, this critically important player is seriously reduced by the antagonistic effect of nitrogen, magnesium, potassium and sodium if they have been oversupplied.
