Last week, our team spent the day making waves for ocean innovation, presenting O! Investor Connect alongside the team at Ocean Impact Organisation. As part of INNOVOCEAN 2024, O! Investor Connect brought together active investors and innovative startups working on critical ocean solutions across climate, biodiversity, pollution and food security. Since 2020, we’ve supported the Ocean Impact Organisation to build a brighter future for our oceans. With Australia’s blue economy valued at $118.5 billion annually, fostering connections like these are vital to driving sustainable change. A big thank you to everyone who joined, including our team Gaynor Tracey and Zane O'Neill, who were on the ground connecting with innovators and investors alike. Check out some highlights from the day below.

  • What if innovation could enable industries to go beyond “no net loss”? We believe it can… In our first (of many) Innovation Challenge, we're helping our partners at Southerly Ten uncover solutions to help responsible offshore wind (OSW) have a net positive impact on the ocean, biodiversity, and climate. We're seeking diverse solutions – from startups, scaleups, science institutions, and small-medium enterprises – with an active interest in helping to support this emerging sector in Australia and New Zealand. If the opportunity for fast-tracked access to industry professionals and prospective customers in the OSW sector appeals to you – then apply today! ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gQ7cs9HU

  • Another year, another INNOVOCEAN done! 🌊🩵
Our annual innovation showcase is always a fantastic way to connect people in the ocean community.

Last week, we were thrilled to host our third INNOVOCEAN, connecting active investors and potential customers with our amazing startups and their solutions, facilitating insightful conversations on the future of Australia’s sustainable ocean economy, and celebrating the brilliant progress being made by OIO and the startups and entrepreneurs we support.

All whilst shining a bright light on the enormous potential of ocean solutions in shaping a better future.

  • How wonderful it was to have our latest cohort together for the OIAP culmination at INNOVOCEAN 2024! We couldn’t agree more with what our Programs Lead Sarah Bertin said, it was a bittersweet but heartening moment. A huge thanks to: AQUIT: Daniela Allerbon, Jörn Bethke, Patricio Flores-Herrera Blue Carbon: Dr Ana Novak, Eva Chiu Pinpoint Earth: Ali Kennard Ocean Intelligence: Joel Bowater Washbox Global: Andrew Crimston And of course Elisa-Marie Dumas !

Concluding the 2024 Ocean Impact Organisation accelerator program with an incredible week in Sydney for INNOVOCEAN! 🌊 Over the past four months, we’ve delved deep into leadership, team culture, organisational structures, strategic partnerships, diverse commercialisation models, funding pathways, impact measurement, and investor readiness. Along the way, we’ve been privileged to learn from a global network of partners, advisors, and founders who generously shared their candid insights and experiences. The growth we’ve witnessed in this cohort has been nothing short of extraordinary. From launching pilots and commercial trials to acquiring new customers, their progress has been a testament to their hard work and innovation. The tangible impacts on ocean health—whether tackling microplastics in waterways, combating global illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, reducing antibiotic usage, pioneering carbon capture solutions, or advancing precision aquaculture technology—are genuinely inspiring and lay the foundation for a healthier future for our ocean. While it’s bittersweet to see this phase of the program conclude, it’s heartening to know this is just the beginning. We’ll continue to support these incredible founders through our alumni programs and beyond. Here’s to lifelong partnerships and a shared mission to create a positive impact on our ocean! 🐋🦈🐟 AQUIT: Daniela Allerbon, Jörn Bethke, Patricio Flores-Herrera Blue Carbon: Dr Ana Novak, Eva Chiu Pinpoint Earth: Ali Kennard Ocean Intelligence: Joel Bowater Washbox Global: Andrew Crimston

🌊Sustainably advancing the Blue Economy from Kuring-gai country.

Last week was a whirlwind of various events, but a highlight was being invited to the panel at #INNOVOCEAN to discuss Australia's draft #SustainableOceanPlan with Erin Coldham, Matt Flood and Jas Chambers - ably moderated by Elisa-Marie Dumas. Having attended #INNOVOCEAN three years in a row now, this event lived up to expectations and had some great content and networking opportunities. It was also a great opportunity to find out just how busy the Sustainable Ocean Plan team has been at Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water - it is reassuring to find out how much foundational consensus building is going on as it guarantees the robustness of the plan. My contribution to the discussion was to point out two things: 1️⃣ The 🇦🇺 domestic maritime sector is in many cases willing, in some cases able, but in most cases not ready to decarbonise. As in other sectors, the maritime industry is waiting for Commonwealth Government to provide vision and regulatory certainty with incentives and disincentives made plain for all to work with. Decarbonisation options exist, but we need to start slow and help businesses work out the right solutions for them. 2️⃣ Whilst the 🇦🇺 domestic maritime sector is a relatively small part of transport emissions, the majority of those emissions are in the commercial area, which is made up of only 24,000 powered domestic commercial vessels. Most of those vessels are locally manufactured by Australian boat builders, designed by Australian naval architects and operated by local companies. There is a thriving marine export industry we could be helping to transition to cleaner solutions, and thus helping our customers as well as ourselves. Australia is a nation that loves the water, whether it be the ocean, our lakes, our waterways, or our rivers. We are #7 in the world in terms of boat ownership per capita and around 10% of our population have boat licenses. Our marine tourism is exceptional and a big drawcard for international and local tourists. 🌊🚣🏄♀️🏊🤿🐟🐠🦈🦀 If we go big on our climate change mitigation ambitions in domestic maritime transport we win with a #cleaner ocean and waterways, #lower GHG emissions, and we could create a sizable #increase in our marine exports!

  • 🌊 This is INNOVOCEAN! 🌊 What a day! Wednesday saw attendees from industry, government, investment, science, not-for-profits and – of course – innovation descend upon the Australian National Maritime Museum on beautiful Darling Harbour for Ocean Impact Organisation’s INNOVOCEAN event. Our third year of the event took attendees on a journey to the deep sea; from a powerful oceanic keynote from awarding winning author James Bradley, an extraordinary panel discussion on shaping the future of Australia’s sustainable ocean economy; a pitch from The University of Queensland's Ventures Challenge winners, to one of the highlights of our year – live pitches and demos from our Ocean Impact Accelerator Program 2024 Cohort! 🚀 Plus a fascinating and moving talk from Deep Rising Movie and Impact co-executive producer Laura Clarke, who screened the film trailer and then announced a new world-first initiative to reclaim the deep seabed from mining companies – in The World’s Largest Ocean Dispute. Thank you everyone! 🩵 And watch this space as we bring all of the very best of INNOVOCEAN to socials. #INNOVOCEAN

Outdated practices in one of the world’s largest industries and the limitations of wastewater infrastructure demand urgent change. Washbox is a simple, proven, and scalable solution: a fully mobile, closed-loop tool wash system designed to save water and stop pollutants from entering our waterways💧 This video was created for the 2023 Ocean Impact Organisation Pitchfest, where Washbox was honoured to take home the titles of Plastic Spotlight Winner and First Runner-Up. 🏆 Now, a year later, I’m proud to continue our journey with the Ocean Impact Organisation as part of the Ocean Impact Accelerator Program 2024. I’m excited to pitch again at INNOVOCEAN 2024 tomorrow, at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. Let’s keep driving change and building a sustainable future. 🌏 #Sustainability #Innovation #OceanImpactAcceleratorProgram #INNOVOCEAN2024 #Washbox #CleanConstruction

  • What a way to kick off INNOVOCEAN week!! 🌊🩵 This morning, the OIO team welcomed founders from our Ocean Impact Accelerator Program 2024 cohort to Sydney - ahead of the big event tomorrow - by showing them some iconic landmarks from a unique angle with Sydney By Kayak! This fun clean up paddle saw us glide around collecting 16.65kg of plastic and other rubbish (not including the 20kg plank of wood someone picked up!) from the waterway, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Luna Park and (barely visible) Opera House as our backdrop. It was great to hear about local conservation initiatives around Sydney Harbour, with every seat since 2018 contributing $15 towards projects like a Mangrove Nursery in Berry’s Bay, a Seabin in Darling Harbour, and a Living Seawall Habitat Boulder installation in Lavender Bay. The cohort and OIO team loved it! Taking to the water and spending time looking after it was the perfect way to connect and slow down for a moment before an epic INNOVOCEAN tomorrow! We can’t wait to see you all there! 🌊

Introducing the Offshore Wind Net Positive Challenge presented by Southerly Ten! Australia’s FIRST offshore wind (OSW) innovation challenge! To date “no net loss” has been industry best practice for offshore infrastructure projects… But what if the OSW industry went beyond this? OIO and Southerly Ten believe that innovative solutions can help responsible offshore wind have a net-positive impact – improving climate outcomes whilst actively enhancing biodiversity.

And that is the aim of this challenge 💡 We’ll be revealing more at our upcoming INNOVOCEAN event on 20 November, where Southerly Ten’s Chief Development Officer, Erin Coldham, will join our “Shaping Australia’s Sustainable Ocean Economy” panel. Get your ticket ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gsSkgEw7 The Offshore Wind Net Positive Challenge aims to create opportunities for innovative Australian and New Zealand organisations to work with the emerging OSW industry, enabling it to be a force for good for the climate, ocean, and biodiversity.
