For internationally trained healthcare professionals, transitioning into the NHS goes beyond passing the OET Test. Our refreshed Living the Language guides for nurses and doctors are designed to support this journey, offering practical advice and strategies for success in both the workplace and social settings. Here’s a glimpse of what the guides cover: - Mastering NHS communication tools like SBAR to streamline patient care and ensure safety. - Understanding NHS team structures and roles to foster collaboration in a multidisciplinary environment. - Adopting patient-centred care approaches, including active listening, empathy and cultural sensitivity. - Navigating cultural nuances such as British conversational norms, humour and workplace etiquette. - Tackling common challenges like phone communication, medical abbreviations and effective documentation. And that’s not all! These guides are packed with actionable tips, real-world examples and advice tailored for healthcare professionals entering a new cultural and professional environment. As Michelle Brennan, Admissions Lead at REACHE shared: “Living the Language guides offer reassuring advice for anyone trained overseas who is working in the NHS for the first time. They highlight that differences in communication style, language, and culture are to be expected when practicing in a new country and present positive ways to further adapt and develop on an ongoing English language journey." We encourage you to explore, download and share these guides with your teams to support your international staff: https://lnkd.in/gFMyRwv5 NHS #InclusiveWorkplaces #InternationalHealthcare #GlobalHealthcare #MulticulturalWorkplaces #SupportingHealthcareProfessionals #WorkplaceInclusion #HealthcareInnovation #LanguageForHealthcare #OETCommunity

Our team recently attended the welcome reception at Belfast City Council for the English Language Support Academy for Medics, a program which is supporting 11 refugee doctors to gain registration with the General Medical Council and work in Northern Ireland. With the support of REACHE and Klik2Learn, these doctors will be offered high-quality support for their OET and PLAB examinations. Hosted by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray, OET was delighted to speak at this event to support refugee healthcare workers. Nadia Falou, Regional Manager for Europe and Africa at OET said: ‘This programme offers a holistic approach in providing support to enable these international doctors to gain registration with the GMC in order to work in Northern Ireland. OET is delighted to be supporting this incredible initiative. As the only English language test designed for doctors, OET will enable them to communicate effectively with their colleagues and patients and thrive in the UK workplace." https://lnkd.in/getnQu7n

The OET team had an amazing time networking and celebrating nursing success at the Nursing Times Workforce Summit and Awards 2024. It was insightful hearing important discussions on how to support the nursing workforce. Brigita Seguis presented insights from the recent OET Impact Study, and OET was honoured to sponsor the category for Best International Recruitment Experience – a wonderful category celebrating the incredible programmes to support international healthcare professionals into the UK workforce. International nurses bring unmatched expertise and cultural richness to the UK workplace. This was a recurring theme across the event, with insightful contributions from panelists like Tracey Collins, who emphasised the value of fostering diversity and supporting international talent. At OET, we’re committed to ensuring these professionals feel supported, confident, and empowered to thrive. Here’s how OET helps: As the National Guardian’s Office noted, it’s essential to create safe spaces to enable international healthcare professionals to speak up. OET’s Living the Language workshops, recently piloted in partnership with Capital Nurse / NHS England, enabled nurses to build their communication skills for the UK workplace and also ensured they learnt effective strategies for speaking up. These workshops offer a safe and supportive learning environment and are led by English language experts experienced in teaching English to the international community. Register your interest: http://bit.ly/3OG7hng For international nurses aiming to register in the UK, OET offers a unique advantage as the only route that ensures NMC acceptance while simultaneously enhancing the communication skills essential for patient safety and quality care. According to a recent Impact Study by Cambridge University Press & Assessment, clinical educators and recruiters confirm that nurses who take the OET Test often demonstrate superior communication skills and greater confidence in their roles, easing their transition into professional life in the UK. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand and joined the conversation. Together, we’re building a brighter future for nursing and healthcare.
