My project team have just delivered a new paging and communications system at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Western Australia The first phase of an 18-month project to deliver a new communication and collaboration system went into service at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) on Wednesday 4 December 2024. This system replaced the end-of-life paging solution which has been used since the hospital opened in 2014. The paging system is critical to hospital operations, used for time-sensitive hospital communications, including emergency codes alerts (critical hospital incidents such as a Code Red – Fire, Smoke, Smell of Gas). The new system replaces a legacy paging solution at FSH with an innovative, contemporary smartphone-based application which replaces more than 1,400 aging wireless phones. Replacement of any critical hospital system is a significant event and is the result of 18 months of collaboration and planning with multiple vendors, including: -Technology and business change management. -Critical, clinical communication process analysis and design. -Comprehensive testing. -User training and familiarisation. -Dedicated 24 hr go-live support team to support the transition; and -Business continuity planning to minimise hospital impact based on an unplanned incident. The solution provides the following key innovative features: -Emergency code notifications with real-time interactive responses. -Self-service contact directory including clinical roles and staff names. -Video and chat functionality for contemporary peer support. -Single tap log-on for state-of-the-art security and identification. -Full integration with hospitals telephony system; and -Automatic location information for emergency Code Black duress alerts. This is the first phase of the project which will ultimately provide many benefits to clinical workflows and workloads, hospital management and patient outcomes.
