Age continues to be the biggest risk factor for severe COVID-19 disease. According to the Department of Health and Aged Care, almost 290 COVID outbreaks were active in Australian aged care homes this week. ‘We know older people are at higher risk of complications from COVID, so it’s important that all eligible residents have access to a booster vaccination,’ OPAN CEO Craig Gear said. ‘We also know older people have been disproportionately affected by the previous waves of lockdowns. The aim is to balance the infection risk with the mental, physical, and nutritional impact of extended periods of social isolation. ‘The Sector Code for Visiting in Aged Care Homes ensures older people have access to an essential visitor at all times.’ For the latest information and your rights to visitation, visit our COVID information page: https://lnkd.in/gBPiQcWM

What happens when things go wrong with your aged care? Who do you turn to? In our latest webinar, Understanding complaints, open disclosure and more, we heard from a provider and how they handle complaints. ‘We call them 4 As: acknowledgement, answers, actions, and apology,’ said General Manager Quality, Safety and Risk at Anglicare, Analou Cariaga. ‘When a complaint is received, we promptly acknowledge it and we provide answers to any questions that they may have, we take appropriate action to resolve the issue and offer a sincere apology if necessary.’ Analou was one of our expert panellists who provided an insider view on complaints handling and the changes that are coming about from the new Aged Care Act. Robin is one of the 34 members of OPAN’s National Older Persons Reference Group, which was formed in 2020 to hear directly from older people about the issues that affect them and to facilitate their active participation in aged care reform. We interviewed her as part of an ongoing series. Read the full Q&A here: https://lnkd.in/gtG9y4Un

As part of our advocacy in action series, we spoke to proud Kuyani/Arrernte woman Bridie Murphy, Aboriginal advocate from our South Australian network member, Aged Rights Advocacy Service (SA) Inc. (ARAS). ‘My greatest achievement is having my children be proud of me. I come from a trauma background. If I think about where I was 5 years ago, and where I am now . . . to be their role model and give them direction, that feels like a really big accomplishment,’ she said. Food consistently ranks in the top 5 presenting issues in residential aged care, according to our quarterly analyses of advocacy and information support. It’s hardly surprising, then, that Food for Thought: your choice, your rights, was one of OPAN’s most popular webinars in 2024. Click below to replay the lively discussion, featuring Maggie Beer, Australia’s favourite cook, Jessica Zilujko, director of the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s Food, Nutrition and Dining Unit, and Rosemary Seam, a member of OPAN’s National Older Persons Reference Group for a lively discussion about what’s changed – and what still needs to be addressed.
