Independent organisation that fosters public appreciation for architecture & public engagement in the future of our city

About us

Since 2008, Open House Melbourne has been connecting people with good design and architecture in the city. We invite people to explore outstanding houses, buildings, infrastructure and landscapes that illustrate our rich history, reflect how we live and work, and offer insights into our future city. We do this through our annual free weekend at the end of July and through a series of accessible, informative and entertaining talks, tours, workshops and events throughout the year. The Weekend puts a spotlight on the unique spaces and places that form the foundation of Melbourne, providing an opportunity for you to consider what makes Melbourne unique. The Weekend showcases buildings of significance in a free and accessible format so everyone can experience the value of good design and architecture, and consider what makes a liveable city. Open House Melbourne received the prestigious Melbourne Award for Contribution to Profile by a Community Organisation in 2012 along with professional recognition for our work promoting architecture to the public with a Special Award from the Australian Institute of Architecture in 2012 and the Chapter President's Prize in 2016. Open House Melbourne is the result of an initiative by the Committee for Melbourne, Future Focus Group, and is part of the Open House Worldwide Network, founded by Open House London.

  • In 2025, Open House Melbourne is excited to partner with the City of Melbourne to produce selected Melbourne Conversations. You are invited to attend the inaugural Melbourne Conversations event for this year - This Is Public... Space - and listen to Dr Jeff Sparrow, Claire Martin, Katrina Sedgwick OAM, Dr Kim Dovey and Sarah Lynn Rees as they unpack the ever-evolving role of public space in our city. This is Public…Space Monday 24 February | 6pm–7:15pm The Edge, Fed Square Free, bookings essential - https://lnkd.in/g9Vc24Gk >> Public space is more than just somewhere to sit or wander through - it is an invaluable resource for connection, learning, entertainment, protest, commemoration and celebration. It is a place where community comes together. But as Melbourne transforms, so too should the way we define and use these spaces. From landmark projects like the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation Project to grassroots urban interventions and our footpaths and plazas, an expert panel will explore how these dynamic constants can foster everything from democracy, social inclusion to climate resilience. Listen to panelists challenge conventional thinking on what makes a space truly public.
