For Jan, life has always been about kindness, connection, and spreading joy. After 30 years teaching in a children’s hospital, retirement didn’t slow her down—it inspired her to give back in new ways. “If you’re kind to just one person, it could turn their day—or life—around because you never know what they’re going through,” Jan shares. Volunteering with Orange Sky for the past year, Jan brings extra magic to every shift with a box of arts and crafts in her car. "It’s a little thing, but you don’t know what impact it might have. Even a bloke might end up painting a pet rock, trying to make it the funniest one." Orange Sky’s Pick Up shifts have opened Jan’s eyes to the realities of homelessness, especially for families in crisis accommodation. “It’s not just old men on benches. Families are doing their best in cramped spaces.” For Jan, volunteering is about more than lending a hand—it’s finding purpose. “I feel I’m doing something worthwhile. I feel useful.” Through her kind words, a listening ear, and creative touch, Jan proves that small acts of love can change lives. 🎨🧡

Positively Connecting Communities
About us
Orange Sky has a simple formula; we provide a platform for every day people to connect through a regular laundry and shower service. The focus is on creating a safe, positive and supportive environment for people who are too often ignored or who feel disconnected from the community. Our volunteers are not social workers or experts on homelessness - they are empathetic listeners and great conversationalists. Orange Sky acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands across Australia. We pay our respects to Ancestors and their descendants, who hold a continued cultural and spiritual connection to the land, seas, and community. We would like to recognise and uphold the First Nations knowledge and contributions of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Orange Sky is committed to working together to create a positive future.

When Finley saw tents in Brisbane's Musgrave Park on his way home from tutoring, he couldn't stop thinking about the people living there. His mum explained that living in a tent is sometimes the only option for people doing it tough. That's when Finley learnt about Orange Sky. "I like knowing there are people who care about people who have to sleep rough," Finley shares. Finley decided to fundraise to help. His mum suggested giving up his Nintendo Switch for a month, but he wanted to do something bigger. That's how Hoops for the Homeless was born. In November, Finley sunk 3,000 basketball hoops (100 every single day!) and raised over $1,400 for Orange Sky! Through his challenge, Finley showed us all how one person can make a big difference, no matter your age. With every hoop bringing us closer to a shared goal - we can help more people feel clean, warm and cared for. We're so appreciative of supporters like Finley 🏀🧡

Wayne’s journey has taken him from stability to ongoing hardships, but his resilience shines through. Life took a turn for Wayne after his divorce 17 years ago. Now living in a campervan, he navigates each day with a deep appreciation for the services that keep him going – like Orange Sky. “It’s sad to be in your own home town and not have anything. I miss having a home." Wayne visits Orange Sky every Tuesday, relying on the kindness of the volunteers who make him feel seen. “They remember your name even on the second time coming," he recalls. “To see the services pop up that make you feel comfortable in your own skin, is awesome.” “Without these kind of services, I dare say my depression would have taken over and I probably wouldn’t be sitting here.” Even though his circumstances are hard, Wayne doesn’t just think of himself. “There’s a lot of people living in parks… tents here, tents there”. Selflessly, he opens his campervan to others in need, offering them a place to charge their devices – a simple but powerful act of kindness. Reflecting on his past and present, Wayne says, “I’ve been at both ends of the spectrum”. His hope is to one day find a home, where he can give back to the community that’s supported him. “When I find a home, I’d love to do some Orange Sky work”. In a situation that can make someone feel isolated and disconnected, Wayne believes it’s the genuine human connection that keeps you going. “You do need that rubbing shoulders with someone, someone that doesn’t judge.”

In 2024, we marked 10 years – 10 years of conversation, support, and connection. This milestone represents a decade of people coming together – starting with something as simple as a chat, a warm shower, or a fresh load of laundry. Over the years, these small moments have sparked countless connections and strengthened communities across Australia and New Zealand. This reflection is about everyone who has been part of the Orange Sky journey – our volunteers, partners, supporters, and friends. We couldn't do it without you. 🧡

As Christmas Day arrives, it's a time to reflect on the importance of connection—something many of us often take for granted. For many, today is spent with family and friends, under a roof filled with warmth and love. But for many others, today is spent alone and without connection. For those facing hardship, this season can be one of the most isolating times of the year. This is a reminder that support, kindness and human connection can continue throughout the holiday season and into the new year for those who need it most. We want to share a special thank you to the Orange Sky volunteers who are keeping our vans running over the holidays. Their passion for our mission means our friends all over Australia don't miss out on a place for genuine conversation on Christmas Day. 📸 Christmas Day 2019, Meanjin Brisbane
