We believe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities should and can have all the necessary ingredients to self-determine our own futures, and protect our country. Founder of the First Nations Clean Energy Network. Original Power is a community-focused, Aboriginal organisation that builds the collective power of our people and backs our leadership, skills and capacity to genuinely achieve self-determination in our community and on country. Our mission is to build the power, skills, capacity and collective capability of our people to genuinely self determine what happens in our communities and on our country. So often, our people know the solutions. We just need the time, resources and support to make them a reality. We do this through three key and interconnected ways: Power our people - If people believe their actions will make a difference, they are more likely to take action, so we provide training, mentoring and support to build people’s capacity and agency. Power campaigns – By working together, people can turn the resources they have into the power they need to transform the challenges they experience. We provide strategy, advice, build skills and connect communities to the resources they need to ensure community lead campaigns act more powerfully together and win. Power solutions – Self-determination means community-driven solutions. We provide research, analysis and resources that can turn ideas into reality, ensuring communities can make informed decisions that take into account long-term community needs as well as country and culture.

The community of Marlinja, NT, has long faced energy insecurity, with frequent power outages and costly prepaid meters making life difficult for families. After years of struggle, Marlinja has joined forces with Original Power to take control of its energy future. Through collaboration and innovation, we’ve developed the Marlinja Microgrid ensuring reliable, clean energy for the community. This is a major step forward in tackling energy inequality and creating opportunities for First Nations people to lead in Australia’s renewable energy transition. Chantelle Johns, our Community Project Coordinator - Marlinja, shared with pv magazine Australia, “One time we were out of power for five days straight. After 4 years of being displaced in temporary housing in Borroloola, last week Original Power, Bushgrid Solar and local partners Ngardara Cooperative were proud to bring Garrwa elder Shirley Simon and her family home to West Island - Mumathumburru, supported by the installation of a new 100% off-grid solar system West Island's aging power system failed back in 2020, but like so many homelands in the NT the family had no support to restore essential services, instead they were forced to move to town. But Shirley never gave up, and with the backing from GARUWA the short film highlighting the struggle for homeland energy security, Power to Country was made and toured widely around the country. The generous donations of those audiences allowed us to not only install a 100% renewable energy system on Mumathumburru, doing away with the need for costly diesel generator backup, but also restore rain and bore water and add WIFI communications so the family can continue their management of Borroloola's stunning sea country from a home base We couldn't be prouder of the project team underpinning this powerful return to country story, and to say thank you to all those who supported Shirley's journey home we're sharing these heart-warming homecoming celebration images - we wish you could be there to share the joy Please check out our Case Study on Solar-Powering Mumathumburru here and help spread the good news! https://lnkd.in/gsZJKbU4? Traditional Owners represented by Nurrdalinji Aboriginal Corporation had their submission to Madeleine King's Future Gas Strategy 'twisted' to suggest they support gas-power as an answer to energy security in remote communities, when they in fact said they wanted to protect country from fracking and that solar is the answer.

Bizarre - disconnections from prepayment for electricity used by the Fed Govt to support gas-powered generation in remote communities & citing a submission by Nurrdalinji Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, which discusses: The answer for the problems of energy security in our communities is not gas but solar energy which is free, plentiful and does not cause further damage to the climate. This is where we want governments to concentrate. The world is turning towards solar and other renewable sources of energy. We want the Federal and NT governments to be promoting renewable energy, not gas, so we can ensure our communities are powered by the sun which is cheap, safe and plentiful. The Nurrdalinji Native Title Aboriginal Corporation submission also states: Fracking will further alienate Traditional Owners from spending time on country, and living there. Fracking will make it more difficult to hunt and fish and to be on and care for country as precious cultural practices. Fracking will bring trucks, noise and disruption to our communities. It will bring workers from out of town and drive up housing prices and rents. https://lnkd.in/gTSuimWT The submission then cites our paper: A 2022 paper published in the esteemed international Nature/Science journal analysed the NT’s disconnection data, reported an overwhelming number of all households (91%) experienced a disconnection from electricity during the 2018–2019 financial year. Almost three quarters of households (74%) were disconnected more than ten times. In contrast, less than 1% of electricity customers in the National Electricity Market experience disconnection in a given year. The loss of essential electricity supply has wide-ranging impacts on us. It makes it hard to safely store medicine and food, makes it hard to sleep and for children to turn up at school. We say over and over again that it’s solar, not gas we need to power remote communities which now use expensive and dirty diesel. “They should take our quotes out from the report and rewrite it so it’s clear we say we want to protect our country and water from new gas drilling. "Gas is yesterday’s fuel. The quickest, cheapest way to power our communities is renewables."
