Many First Nations entrepreneurs face barriers to accessing the appropriate capital needed to start and scale their businesses. This is something PRF partner First Australians Capital is addressing by providing Indigenous businesses with capacity building services and access to capital. PRF's Head of Impact Investing Ben Smith says by seeding and supporting community-led funds like First Australians Capital (FAC), PRF can help “increase the market of sustainable impact funds and attract capital from new and diverse sources.” Chair of FAC Jocelyn King says, "PRF’s commitment to FAC is allowing us to unlock innovation and self-determination for hundreds of Indigenous businesses and founders.” Read more in this case study, first published in our 2024 Annual Review: https://loom.ly/KgazKGc

“We need to stop praising charities for their ability to deliver impact on the smell of an oily rag,” says PRF Chief Alliances Officer Liz Yeo, “and instead properly fund them to do the complex and innovative work required to create long-term social change.” NFPs' indirect costs are essential for delivering impactful programs and enduring outcomes. And yet, they often go underfunded, leaving NFPs to underinvest in their core operational and infrastructure needs and struggling to effectively achieve their purpose. Pay What it Takes (PWIT) is an initaitive committed to understanding what it actually takes to create impact and paying for it. We've been supporting a diverse team of experts to co-design PWIT principles and guidelines to translate the research into action. Since 2020, PRF has granted approximately $23 million directly into work to address domestic and family violence (DFV) in Australia and published six stand-alone reports. Our engagement with the DFV sector has been deliberate, prioritising depth of understanding over speed. This has enabled us to build connections in the sector, build evidence about the realities confronting frontline services, as well as build internal understanding and knowledge about the DFV landscape in Australia. "A lot of us have come from spaces where the teachers or the people in power don't necessarily recognise the effort it takes to get school to do the work, to get the qualifications... Whereas having that validation, knowing it's appreciated and seen and valued, it gives you the drive to keep going and to want to do it more," said one young person quoted in Learning Creates Australia's new report 'The Whole Learner: Young People on the Next Chapter in Learning Beyond Limits'. This work was co-led by young people as both researchers and contributors and delivers a clear message: it's time for the education system to move beyond narrow academic results and truly recognise the whole learner. Over the past year, Innovation Unit has engaged with 31 domestic and family violence organisations working with a range of specialist cohorts and communities that were awarded grants as part of PRF's Specialist DFV grant round in 2023. This national network was formed as part of an effort to strengthen violence prevention in Australia, by connecting DFV practitioners working on shared challenges, and supporting them to collectively develop insights, ideas and opportunities for change at ‘field’ level. It is the next report in the Power of Recognising More Research Series and was co-led by young emerging researchers who have had recent experience in secondary education alongside the expertise of our partners at the University of Western Sydney - Young and Resilient Research Centre You can read the full report below or on our website - https://lnkd.in/gFjambmB #youngpeople #newrelease #report #education #changemaking #learningcreatesaustralia Philippa Collin, Mietta S., Charlie Connell-Tobin, Linh Dang
