  • S1 EP13 PHOENIX SOUND OUT NOW Nine years ago, Australia passed the Narcotic Drugs Amendment Act. Also known as ‘Dan’s Law’, it promised safe, legal, and reliable access to medical cannabis for those who need it most. But today, too many patients are still battling stigma, red tape, and an industry that far too often prioritises profit over people. Patients are still being treated like customers instead of people in need of care. Industry players with dollar signs in their eyes are flooding the space, while those who fought for reform are left to pick up the pieces. My guest today knows this fight better than anyone. What started as a mother’s desperate attempt to ease her son’s suffering turned into a national movement for reform. But change remains slow and regulations remain flawed and for far too many - real access remains out of reach. At a time when ‘Australia is seeing an “alarming and devastating” rise in the number of drug-induced deaths, with many of them preventable and being driven by opioids, including a 40% surge in heroin-related fatalities.’ it’s clear we need to take this new class of medicine seriously as a potential solution to this rising global epidemic. Medical cannabis is legal in Australia—but what good is legality without affordability, without education?   We need change, acceptance and for those in leadership to step up and put patients first. This starts with education to breaks down stigma, not just for doctors, but for policymakers and the public - we need to hold the system accountable for the barriers that still exist. In the latest episode of Phoenix Sound, I sit down with Lucy Haslam to talk about her latest mission—In Plain Sight, a documentary delving into every aspect of the future of medicine in a bid to provide the Australian public with a cohesive educational experience – one that could end the stigma around medical cannabis for good. If you care about patient rights, ethical prescribing, and making real change, I urge you to listen and if you can, support In Plain Sight which is linked in the show notes for this episode. No one should have to fight this hard just to access the medicine they need. 🎧 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gHux8Mey 💡 Join the conversation: What do you think needs to change to put patients first?

  • For women living with endometriosis, conventional treatment options often fall painfully short of addressing the complexities of this disease. Medical cannabis, however, is emerging as a transformative alternative, offering relief, hope, and a new path forward in life for those seeking long-term relief. In the latest episode of Phoenix Sound, I spoke with Eric Chan, COO of Cannabis Warehouse, Australia’s first centralised Compassionate Access Scheme which is making treatment more accessible and affordable for those who need it most. Eric’s journey is a masterclass in leadership, strategic innovation, and building trust in emerging markets. We Explore: 1. The Origin of COMPASS: How a centralised Compassionate Access Scheme came to life through collaboration and innovation 2. Navigating Stigma: The challenges of combating misinformation and public perceptions about cannabis 3. Patient Accessibility: How the COMPASS program is helping patients through its tiered support system 4. Ethics in Healthcare: Balancing business with moral responsibility in the cannabis industry. 5. Future Trends: Eric’s vision for medicinal cannabis in Australia and globally. Listen to the full conversation here, or wherever you get your podcasts: https://lnkd.in/gamTEKtm

  • EP09: 'Being Human in the Age of AI' with Dr. Susie Alegre #AI all feels a bit like magic, akin to Santa coming down the chimney on Christmas Eve and never failing to leave the right presents for everyone on Earth before heading back to Lapland on his new electric smart sleigh. It’s easy to forget about the ones who help make the magic. Back in reality, its real people known as ‘click workers’ making AI magic, as Dr. Susie Alegre, international human rights lawyer and author writes in her new book ‘Human Rights, Robot Wrongs: Being Human in the Age of AI’: “Cutting-edge technology runs on the blood, sweat and tears of people all around the world: ‘click workers’ who label the content we don’t want to see and teach AI what the world looks like in Kenya and Venezuela; refugees from Syria; prisoners in Finland.” In the latest episode of Phoenix Sound, we explore: -       What human rights are and why they need protecting  -       Why AI is a gender-based problem (built on a myth dating back a millennia!) -       The actions we can take today to ensure humanity is protected tomorrow We're keen to cultivate a community of free thinkers. What's your take on AI? How's it transforming your world? - Kel Myers Host - Phoenix Sound Podcast https://lnkd.in/gJn-uKt5

In the words of Farideh - 'we've never really studied the female body' Despite advancements in health science, chronic period pain remains largely normalised and under-researched, leaving many women to suffer needlessly. As someone who lived with Primary Dysmenorrhoea for 19 years before being diagnosed with #endometriosis (where it then became Secondary Dysmenorrhoea), I understand how vital and urgent the quest for better treatment outcomes is. This week on Phoenix Sound, we're proud to feature Prof Kylie O'Brien, Chief Scientific Officer at Cannim Group, sponsors of The Lumir Mission Plant-based Medicine for Primary Dysmenorrhoea (Period Pain) Study. Conducted by NICM Health Research Institute’s Associate A/Prof Mike Armour, the study aims to assess the potential effectiveness of plant-based medicine in alleviating period pain over a 6-month duration. Join us on substack as we walk through the science behind this study, including information on how to participate in this groundbreaking research. #phoenixsound #womenshealth #medicinalcannabis #substack

  • Many women with #endometriosis struggle to find relief through traditional medical treatments, and in this episode of Phoenix Sound, Dr. Amy Carmichael, a practitioner in medicinal cannabis and functional medicine, sheds a light on alternative solutions for women with endometriosis. The impact of endometriosis extends beyond physical pain. It affects mental health, intimacy, and the overall quality of life of the women who live with it, and the Western medical model, while effective in acute care, far too often falls short in providing the kind of comprehensive care that addresses the psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of chronic disease. By incorporating plant-based medicine and a patient-centred approach, Dr. Amy offers a beacon of hope for those seeking holistic and personalised treatments. Her bold insights provide a pathway for women to explore new possibilities in managing their health and wellbeing. Listening to women's voices, even when we disagree, is crucial in fostering a supportive and inclusive healthcare environment where everyone feels heard. Both endometriosis and medicinal cannabis are complex subjects, which is why we’ve decided to honour this conversation with a two-part series. • Recently, I watched the film Cabrini, and a line that stood out to me was, "start the mission and the means will take care of themselves." This resonated deeply as I reflected on my conversation with Sam Costa CEO of CHARLI, in the latest episode of the Phoenix Sound podcast.
