About us
75% of Australians are exposed to at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Phoenix Australia promotes recovery for the 15 million Australians affected by trauma. A leader in posttraumatic mental health for over 20 years, Phoenix Australia partners with and guides organisations, communities and individuals to reduce the effects of trauma. Our journey began working with the defence forces, developing treatment and recovery programs for soldiers returning from conflict. Today our work has a much broader focus, as we seek to improve the outcomes for all Australians affected by trauma. Our acclaimed research and international networks are the foundation of our work, which encompasses Research and Evaluation, Policy and Service Development, and Education and Training. It is our unique ability to integrate knowledge and skills from all of these activities to develop best practice, tailored implementation. Phoenix Australia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with an affiliation with the University of Melbourne.

As one of the largest collaborators in healthcare, there's still a moment of anxiety when there are key personnel changes at one of our many partner. Inevitably though, it only reminds us that there was a reason the Royal Commission talked about trauma in every chapter. Thanks for the support Bronwyn Lawman and our friends at Thorne Harbour Health.

Seeking Victorians with PTSD: Join the STOP Trial (Silexan in the Treatment Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder). Are you or someone you know struggling with PTSD? Phoenix Australia is leading a new research study called the STOP Trial, investigating a new approach to managing PTSD symptoms. The STOP Trial is exploring whether adding Silexan, a readily available lavender oil medication, to existing treatment plans can improve outcomes for adults with PTSD. Silexan is safe and is already used for anxiety disorders in Australia. This research could pave the way for a more accessible and effective treatment option for PTSD. If you're 18 or over, diagnosed with PTSD, and live in Victoria, you may be eligible to participate in the STOP Trial. Visit our website to learn more: https://bit.ly/3XaDqHx Individuals interested in participating in the trial can self-refer by contacting our intake team on 1800 292 969 or at stop-trial@unimelb.edu.au. Please include ‘The STOP Trial’ in your email. #PhoenixAustralia #research #ptsd #treatment #clinicalresearch #mentalhealth #stop #stoptrial

Our CEO and Director, Nicole Sadler AM CSC, recently had the privilege of being part of a panel exploring how a NSW coastal community – Bermagui - which was significantly impacted by the devastating Black Summer bushfires, can prepare themselves for yet another bushfire season. The response and contributions from the Bermagui community were wonderful, and about 150 people gathered to share practical ideas, concerns and challenges. Sincere thanks to the community and other panel members who generously shared their time and expertise, including our Phoenix Australia ambassador, Magda Szubanski , along with Kelly Eastwood and Gabrielle Dolan. Feeling a bit more anxious this time of year is normal and expected, and there are a lot of things that individuals, families, work teams and the community can do to help manage this. You can find some advice on how to psychologically prepare for disaster season here: https://bit.ly/4fUJQCk or reach out to Phoenix Australia for more support and advice for readying your community or organisation. https://bit.ly/3v35ga6 #Disaster #Preparedness #Community #PhoenixAustralia #DisasterMentalHealthHub

Our recent Community of Practice (COP) featured Michelle Spinks, who shared valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by emergency service workers. She highlighted the often-overlooked impact of grief and trauma on these individuals, noting the lack of cultural validation and minimal training within their organisations. Spinks emphasised the critical role of mental health professionals in supporting emergency workers. She stated, "Mental health professionals can play a crucial role in helping emergency services workers navigate trauma and grief, especially within cultures that may not fully acknowledge these experiences." The COP delved into the complex interplay of trauma and grief, exploring practical strategies for mental health professionals to assist emergency workers. We also discussed the importance of challenging cultural norms that silence and invalidate the grief experienced by these individuals. #mentalhealth #emergencyworkers #griefandloss #trauma #communityofpractice #responderassist #phoenixaustralia #MHPN Mental Health Professionals' Network Tim Peck

There is #NoExcuse for gender-based violence. Today marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a call to action and a reminder that violence against women and girls is the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violation in the world. Almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their life. Violence against women continues to be an obstacle to achieving equality, development, peace and the fulfilment of women and girls’ human rights around the globe. The solution lies in robust responses, including investment in prevention. During this year’s #16Days and beyond campaign, we recognise the vital role women’s organisations play in providing services on a local level, bolstering women’s empowerment and reaching those at risk of being left behind.
