The training and exercise scenarios included simulated steering failure, man overboard and rescue, and recovery from simulated crew injuries. Good day Jack Goodwin…..After joining Poseidon Sea Pilots earlier this year, Jack Goodwin was recently awarded his L4 Pilotage Licence for Brisbane. Jack started his seagoing career at age 17 in 2006 as a Deck Cadet with BP Shipping, with his first ship being the British Curlew (an Aframax crude oil tanker) and the first trip including a discharge in Brisbane at the old bp refinery crude oil berth at Luggage point. After completing his Cadetship, Jack sailed as a 3rd mate with TRIDENT LNG SHIPPING SERVICES PTY LTD. Initially, this was on the Helcion and the Helix, both Australian manned products tankers trading around the Australian coast, with a subsequent transfer to the North West Shelf LNG fleet. Jack has sailed on all four Australian LNG ships in the North West Shelf fleet over a period of 13.5 years, and in all ranks from 3rd mate through to Master. Before commencing with Poseidon Sea Pilots, Jack was fortunate enough to be Master for the final voyage of the Northwest Sanderling, which at that time, was the oldest trading LNG ship in the world. Jack and his wife have an 18 month old son and relocated to the Sunshine Coast from the Northern Rivers in NSW to work with Poseidon Sea Pilots. Congratulations and well done to Jack on the licence! Ahoy…..Poseidon Sea Pilots was proud to support the Royal Australian Navy's Multi-role Aviation Training Vessel (MATV) - the Merchant Vessel (MV) Sycamore, as she set sail from Western Port, Victoria. This was a slight reversal of roles for AMS Group / Poseidon Sea Pilots and Teekay Shipping Australia, this time with AMS Group / Poseidon Sea Pilots supporting long time partners Teekay Shipping Australia in their role operating the Sycamore. The Poseidon Sea Pilots service was expertly provided by the team of Capt. Ray McAllister (Pilot), Alister Dehnert (Launch Master), and Tom Parsons (Deckhand). The video is of the MV Aries outbound from Brisbane and appearing to be pushing across the sand. A Full Circle Moment 🛳 Today, I experienced something truly special. Jacob Tippo who once started as a trainee under our program, is now a qualified Launch Master, proudly navigating the waterways around South East Queensland. It was a full circle moment witnessing his skills and confidence behind the wheel – all while picking up and dropping off marine pilots on massive container ships and cruise liners. Jacob, a proud Quandamooka man from Stradbroke Island, now looks after these waters just as his old people did. He studied and trained at the same time, persevering through challenges, and today, his journey stands as a testament to what dedication and support can achieve. Two years ago, Krueger Consultancy Services - KCS embarked on a journey with AMS Group and Poseidon Sea Pilots to implement and deliver their Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan. Our mission was to create real, tangible outcomes for First Nations people, ensuring that Indigenous engagement was at the forefront. We set up the Bunji Mentoring program, developed cultural awareness training, and guided AMS Group to gain their Innovate RAP endorsement. But the real success! Watching individuals like Jacob thrive. These deliverables were not just about filling positions but empowering First Nations people to step into roles as Launch Masters, pilots, and more. Seeing Jacob lead today, I’m reminded of why this work matters.
