  • Developing our people is top of our list and, for us, mentoring is a valuable part of this. Through our Graduate Mentoring Program we team up each of our graduates with a team member who is completing our Power Up leadership program. Our mentoring program runs for 12 months, and it all kicked off recently with a half-day workshop that included mentor/mentee 'speed dating', to help us match the right people. Unlike coaching, mentoring is not formally evaluated and is not connected to job advancement. But it provides both parties with a raft of benefits. Mentors get to share their knowledge, expertise and experience. Some of our people have decades of experience under their belt, which is priceless! Mentees can develop new skills and knowledge, and interact with someone who can help build their confidence and encourage a growth mindset. #Mentor #Mentee #Development #Graduates #Leadership

  • We take our environmental responsibilities seriously, so much so that we recently sent samples of these innocent-looking green shoots to a lab for genetic testing! Why? Because there was a chance they were the Vulnerable species Typhonium praetermissum, and they were growing at a site we had earmarked for an additional wastewater treatment pond at our Palmerston facility. It's impossible to tell one species of Typhonium from another with the naked eye, so genetic testing was required. Thankfully, tests showed this was not Typhonium praetermissum, so the project could proceed as planned. #Environment #Nature

  • When we welcome a group of new apprentices and trainees, we want them to learn about our organisation as a whole, not just the area they work in. We do this through a series of talks with senior figures from across our team. This helps new arrivals see how their role fits into not only what their immediate team delivers, but also our wider strategic plan. But it goes beyond that, thanks to contributions from people like Jeanneen McLennan. Jeanneen is co-chair of our Reconciliation Advisory Committee (RAC). Along with the rest of the RAC, she provides advice on a range of issues, from how we can deliver more effectively for remote customers, to helping us better understand our capacity to effect real change. Jeanneen also uses her meeting with our new arrivals to share her own story (including the fact her dad was a valued member of our team for many years!), as well as insights into the lives of Aboriginal Territorians, and some of the Territory's history. Sessions like this are often a favourite with attendees. Thank you Jeanneen! #NorthernTerritory #Induction #AboriginalAffairs

  • As an organisation working across power, water, urban, regional and remote, we need a team with a wide range of skills and knowledge! Talking to media outlets is one way for us to share that knowledge more broadly, and a couple of recent examples include Danny Browne from our Water Services team talking to ABC Darwin, and Michelle Flynn from our Customer Experience team talking to 8CCC radio in Tennant Creek. Danny spoke to the ABC's Jess Ong at our Ludmilla Wastewater Treatment Plant. The subject? What happens when you flush the toilet, including the weird and not-so-wonderful things that end up in our sewerage system, and why we should only ever flush the 3 Ps - pee, poo and (toilet) paper. You can listen to their half amusing, half horrifying chat at https://loom.ly/-t6DPn8 Michelle was in Tennant Creek to deliver a customer pop-up and took the opportunity to chat to 8CCC about a range of subjects. She's particularly passionate about our free Life Support Service, and this was a great chance to spread the word with the local community. Thanks to all our team members who take time away from their BAU jobs to help share our story. #Media #Power #Water #LifeSupport #PeePooPaper

  • Today is International Battery Day, which celebrates the birth of the man credited with inventing the world's first battery 225 years ago! The humble battery has evolved a fair bit since Alessandro Volta's stack of copper and zinc discs separated by layers of brine-soaked cloth sparked a revolution (yes, his name is where the word 'voltage' comes from). These days batteries help power cars, homes and more, including the remote community of Daly River/Nauiyu. We've been incorporating solar energy technology into our business for more than 20 years, and this time-lapse video shows the construction of a solar energy system in Daly River/Nauiyu that features a 2MWh battery. This was the flagship project of our Solar Energy Transformation Program (SETuP), which saw 10MW of solar rolled out to 25 communities. The result? We're saving around 4 million litres of diesel every year. SETuP was funded by the Australian Government, through ARENA, and the Northern Territory Government. #Sustainable #Solar #RemoteLiving #NorthernTerritory

  • Demand for electric vehicles is rising, so we've drafted a new Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Technical Specification to help stakeholders such as developers, installers and manufacturers keep up. The new document will support the changing needs of our community, and provide vital information to stakeholders about tech specifications, and connecting and interfacing with our power networks. Help us produce the most fit-for-purpose document possible by giving us your feedback. Stage 1 consultation closes on 7 March 2025. Visit https://loom.ly/ZSjUkks to find out more. We'll also hold an online public consultation forum on 19 March 2025 and will provide details nearer the time. #Sustainability #ElectricVehicles #YourSay

  • The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority has opened consultation for the Adelaide River Off-stream Water Storage (AROWS) program. AROWS would involve pumping water from the Adelaide River during the wet season and storing it in a natural geological basin in the Marrakai region. The project is part of the Darwin Region Water Supply Infrastructure Program, funded by the Australian Government through the National Water Grid Fund, and the Northern Territory Government. Our team has been involved in developing the business case for this exciting project, which showed it would be developed over a 7-10 year period and would provide increased water security to the region for the next 50-plus years, supporting economic and population growth. Consultation closes on 25 February 2025, so now is the time to have your say. • Our That's My Water! program is celebrating 10 years this year, and expressions of interest for the 2025 program are open now. More than 6500 students from 40-plus schools have taken part in the program since 2016. In 2024 alone the schools who got involved saved a combined 18 million litres of water! Equally as important, everyone who took part learnt more about where our water comes from, and how to deal with real-world challenges around water sustainability. This is a great STEM learning experience, so if you're a teacher or a parent with school-aged children, visit https://loom.ly/GUPh430 to find out more. Expressions of interest close at the end of February. #Water #Sustainability #STEM #Learning

  • 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍! We love seeing young people, such as new apprentice Amy Ferguson, starting a career in our sector! And we're ready to support two students enrolled in a higher education engineering course at Charles Darwin University Charles Darwin University, through our Trevor Horman Scholarships. The only member of our team to have a substation named in his honour, Trevor was a visionary engineer who helped rebuild Darwin after Cyclone Tracy. He spent decades as a valued member of our team, and was a wonderful role model to many. We have 2 scholarships available to support female and Aboriginal engineering students. Applications close on 7 March 2025. To apply or find out more about eligibility requirements, visit https://loom.ly/SmP6Sh8 #NorthernTerritory #Scholarship #Career

  • Financial literacy is the ability to understand and use a range of financial skills and concepts, such as budgeting, loans, debt, banking, credit, saving and more. These vital skills can empower people and change their life. This is why we’re supporting the Children's Ground Financial Literacy Program in Alice Springs through our Community Grants Program. The program is a way for us to help our wider community and involves partnering with a variety of organisations delivering initiatives that make a difference to the lives of Territorians. To find out more about our Community Grants Program, including the 2025 recipients, visit https://loom.ly/xKD9TO0 To find out more about Children's Ground, visit https://loom.ly/xQZansk #FinancialLiteracy #Money #Learning #LifeChangingSkills
