On Friday 31 January, prefabAUS and the Commonwealth Bank (CBA) were hosted by founding prefabAUS member Modscape for a major announcement aimed at alleviating some of the financial barriers associated with homebuyers purchasing prefabricated homes. CBA is joining prefabAUS as our first bank member and is introducing policy changes to simplify the home buying journey for prefabricated housing. Under the new policy, Commonwealth Bank will enable customers to access progress payments prior to the property being affixed to land, up to 60 per cent of the total contract price, rather than the customer having to fund up to 90 per cent of the upfront costs, which has previously been the case. Additionally, CBA has agreed to sponsor the development of a standard form contract (being facilitated by prefabAUS) for the modern methods of construction (MMC) sector to help support home buyers and manufacturers.  This is great news for our members, our industry and the consumers who want a home that is Better, Faster and Smarter. On Wednesday morning, at prefabAUS founding member Modscape’s Melbourne facility, the Albanese and Allan Governments announced they are investing a combined $50 million to establish the Melbourne Polytechnic 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 – the first dedicated training facility in Australia focused exclusively on advanced construction courses. PrefabAUS assisted with the business case and sees the Centre of Excellence as a leader, aggregator and multiplier, and a focal point for industry collaboration. It will provide digital maturity assessments, industry extension information services, technology demonstration and prototyping, promotions, events, information sessions, industry and technology fore-sighting, and information on key emerging technologies and workforce skills. This initiative will benefit the community that is waiting for more high-quality housing stock, the incoming generations of construction industry professionals with native digital skills, the wider construction industry and our members in need of appropriately skilled workers. The Centre of Excellence will be a driving force for nationwide growth in skills development for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC).
