  • This month, the QBCC has commenced a month-long compliance and enforcement audit program; a collaborative initiative involving the Compliance and Enforcement Branch, Building and Technical Inspectorate, Regional Services, and Building Safety and Standards. Multidisciplinary teams, comprised of QBCC compliance officers and technical inspection staff, will be strategically deployed to conduct these audits. The audit supports our strategic objective to support a strong, safe and sustainable industry through responsive regulatory activity to reduce risk and harm. This month-long program will see the building and construction regulator conducting proactive building site audits across Queensland. While compliance is a primary focus, our goal is to educate contractors about their obligations and responsibilities within the industry and help build understanding with homeowners around their rights and protections. Last year’s October audit program saw approximately 1,300 sites visited (an increase of 1507% on the previous year) and a total of 3,906 audits completed. The regulator is poised to target building sites based on regulatory intelligence and based on the likelihood of harm to those in the industry such as uninsured work performed by unlicensed contractors and the impact of defective building work. Those in the industry must ensure they are aware of their duties and have systems in place that ensure the legal and compliance obligations are being effectively managed. Some guidance material to help you understand your responsibilities on site are linked comments below. These activities further demonstrate our ongoing commitment to empowering those within the industry to uphold standards and working together to ensure better building outcomes. More information about the outcomes will be shared in once the audit is complete.
