Thank you Joshua Jones for sharing the story of your accident so openly and honestly with us today. You also shone a light on the aftermath - how it ripples across workmates, partners, parents and friends and gave delegates insight into the process of rehabilitation both physically and mentally. Stories like yours are a powerful reminder of why safety must always be our first priority. #qmihsc2024 #miningsafety

Futurist Anders Sorman-Nilsson had a session with delegates this morning about the adoption of new technology and combining this with ‘human soul’. It gave us plenty to think about as we look to the future of mining safety. #miningindustry #healthandsafety #backtothefuture #QMIHSC2024

As a fourth-generation miner, mining is in the blood for Keith Muller. He started coal mining in Oakleigh in the early 1980s and spent his working life across a range of central Queensland mines. He said when he first started the work gear was a pair of stubbies, a t-shirt and a pair of work boots. “The only safety equipment was a helmet and a self-rescuer kit, which had a hose to scrub the dirty air but it didn’t provide oxygen.” Mining safety is an issue close to the heart for Keith and his wife Karyn. She was 18 years old when her father, Brian Randolph, was one of the men killed at the Box Flat mine. Their friend, Bill, was only two years old when his father was also killed in the same mining incident. Keith, Karyn and Bill are at the conference this week manning the Mining Museum display showing the evolution of mining equipment and paying tribute to the Queensland miners who have lost their lives. They are in the Ipswich Historical Society which has a dedicated Mining Museum and provided the material for the display. Keith said he liked the conference theme of back to the future. “My one bit of advice to young people getting into mining would be to listen to the old fellas on site because they know the safety risks better than anyone.” Want to know more? Stephen "Woodduck" Woods was dedicated to advocating for miner safety and highly respected in our industry. He was also a good friend to many of our conference committee and delegates. Woodduck was posthumously awarded the #QMIHSC2024 Legends award after passing away from a battle with cancer in May. This poem by Murray Hartin pays tribute to Woodduck - a true mining safety legend. #LegendAward #MiningIndustry #HealthandSafety
