More than just a meal
About us
Meals on Wheels has had a place in the hearts and homes of Australians for more than 60 years. We deliver healthy meals to clients' homes to not only ensure their nutritional requirements are being met, but to provide regular social contact plus friendly check to see all is well. Every day a friendly smile, a chat about the weather, a nutritious meal and knowing someone will drop by to say hello, changes the lives of many Australians and it’s not just the clients who value this contact, ask any of the 15,000 volunteers and they will tell you reaching out and making a difference in somebody's day, makes their day. Independence is something we all value and to have that taken away through not being able to go to the shops for groceries or to cook regular meals, should not be an obstacle to autonomy. The community spirit that defines Meals on Wheels encompassing respect, care and teamwork is shared between clients, volunteers and staff who keep the service running from cooks to drivers, coordinators, administrators to fundraisers. Meals on Wheels delivers healthy meals to clients’ homes to not only ensure their nutritional requirements are being met, but to provide regular social contact and a friendly check to see that all is well. This enables people to continue to live in their own homes and maintain their freedom and lifestyle. Who can get Meals on Wheels? We cater for people with a wide variety of support needs, not just meals for seniors. Simply, if people are unable to prepare a meal or shop for themselves with ease, we can provide a solution. You, or someone you know, may be in their senior years, recovering after hospitalisation, a major illness or surgery, a person with a disability, a carer, or needing assistance due to a special circumstance, Meals on Wheels can provide meals to suit a client’s personal requirements and can accommodate most dietary needs as well as taste preferences. Helping people to stay in their homes, is at the heart of what we do.

We have had the opportunity today at the Aged & Community Care Providers Association to speak with Shadow Minister for Aged Care, Senator Anne Ruston. Senator Ruston has made it a priority to seek out the opinions from on the grounds providers, workforce members and clients around the New Aged Care Act and we look forward to working with her and her team in ensuring the value of Meals on Wheels is recognised.

Day two of the Aged & Community Care Providers Association conference has more connections being made within and out of the sector. Keynote speaker, JAMIE DURIE OAM , shared the importance of the outside spaces being provided and their positive impact on a person’s wellbeing. Jamie’s mum was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and we look forward to exploring with Jamie and his team to identify opportunities to enhance wellbeing, supporting connection with nature and our communities.

On World Gratitude Day, it's important to reflect on the role that food plays in our lives and be grateful for the access so many of us have to a meal. In this period of economic hardship and with a wide range of households suffering from the impact of financial distress, many of the vulnerable in our society are feeling these challenges acutely. We at Meals on Wheels are very proud of our contribution in easing the anxieties of the elderly and their loved ones, that they are accessing nutritious meals on a daily basis, with an essential social connection that preserves and nurtures wellbeing. Our work in extending access for the vulnerable to our services has driven our purpose, forged our mission and set our strategy for the next 3 years. We have developed a strategic approach to these challenges that harnesses the passion of our members and the human spirit that they embody through their tireless work in the community every day. We are more than just a meal. As the Chair of Meals on Wheels Queensland, l am privileged to introduce our strategy to our members, stakeholders, partners and the communities of Queensland, so that we can ignite more debate on how we work together to make the lives of the elderly and the vulnerable that much easier and ensure their well-being is preserved through a nutritious meal, kind word, care and human connection. Highlights from the Meals on Wheels National Conference! 🎉 Last week, our team had the incredible opportunity to attend the Meals on Wheels Australia National Conference in Sydney, held from Wednesday to Friday. The three days were packed with fantastic speakers, insightful sessions, and plenty of networking with fellow Meals on Wheels representatives from across the country. A special highlight was the fun 70s-themed dinner party, which added a delightful touch of nostalgia and camaraderie. We were also thrilled to have a stand in the exhibition area, showcasing our new volunteer rostering system, Rosterfy. A big thank you to Cameron and Dee from Rosterfy for joining us and helping demonstrate how this innovative tool will streamline our volunteer coordination. MOWQ was actively involved in several presentations, including an overview of our recent project, "Let's Do Lunch." Additionally, our CEO, Evan Hill, participated in a panel discussion with other Meals on Wheels states, focusing on strategic priorities for the future of our organisation nationwide. Thank you to everyone who made this conference memorable. Until next time! 🥳 #MOWQ #NationalConference #MealsOnWheels #CommunitySupport #Rosterfy #Community #nonforprofit #charity #volunteers
