About us

Based in Perth, the Raine Study is the world's first three-generation pregnancy cohort study and one of the most successful population health studies ever undertaken. Since 1989, the Raine Study has studied the same group of nearly 3,000 young Western Australians from before they were born, their parents, grandparents and now offspring. Data from the Raine Study was used to establish international guidelines for ultrasound in pregnancy and continues to be used by researchers around the world to inform and improve public health policy. The Raine Study is a valuable resource for researchers in Australia and internationally. There are currently more than 150 researchers utilising the Raine Study, who bring expertise from 25 broad areas of research including; asthma and atopy, cardiovascular and metabolic heath, childhood developmental growth, dental health, diabetes, genetic epidemiology, gastro-enterology, infection and immunity, mental health, musculoskeletal development, nutrition, physical activity, ophthalmology, pregnancy and birth, reproductive health, sleep and risk taking behavior. • Considering Honours, Masters or a PhD? The Raine Study supports student and early career researchers with extensive, time and cost-effective cohort data that has already been meticulously collected and cleaned. As the world's oldest pre-birth longitudinal study, the Raine Study is one of the most successful and extensive cohort studies of pregnancy, childhood and adulthood ever undertaken. Over the last 35 years, this pioneering study focuses on understanding the multifaceted interactions of genetics, environment, behaviour and developmental outcomes to advance human health and wellbeing. We facilitate limitless opportunities for #researchers to access rich and valuable sources of evidence about developmental origins of health and disease. The main cohort, Generation 2, have completed 17 follow ups from infancy, into adolescence and now adulthood. They have been comprehensively phenotyped through questionnaires, clinical parameters and data on genetics such as GWAS, exomes, telomeres and epigenetic profiles are also available. Selected data is also available on the parents (the biological parents), and partners of Generation 2. In 2024, we began recruitment of Generation 3, the babies of Generation 2. We have 13 special interest groups, covering diverse research areas like cardiometabolic, genetics, mental health, cognition, reproduction, sleep, activity, and more. Leaders of these groups are well positioned to supervise projects using Raine Study data. View all our groups here https://bit.ly/3BveZ0M or find the contact details of our leaders here https://bit.ly/41K52qK Two exciting projects are currently looking for enthusiastic researchers. "Intergenerational Comparison of Food Intake and Health Outcomes". Supervisor: Therese O'Sullivan from Edith Cowan University. If you're a PhD student, consider "Uncovering a Hidden Culprit of Heart Disease". Supervisor Trevor Mori from The University of Western Australia. View these two project details here https://bit.ly/3BAECNJ Consider leveraging 35 years of Raine Study data to complete your upcoming research project. Feel free to share this opportunity with your peers.

  • Let's talk about sleep research with Professor Peter Eastwood from Murdoch University. Professor Eastwood highlighted over 25 research publications using sleep data from The Raine Study at our recent 2024 Raine Study Symposium. Studies have identified links between sleep, sleep disorders (like obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia), cardiovascular function, physical activity, and more. Discover how the Raine Study's extensive and high quality data has a broad influence, contributing to national initiatives like the Commonwealth of Australia's Parliamentary Inquiry into Sleep Health Awareness. To see the hugely positive influence of cohort studies like The Raine Study, watch Professor Eastwood's 20 minute presentation, and other Symposium talks, here https://bit.ly/4efpcvH Inquiry into Sleep Health Awareness report (titled Bedtime Reading) https://bit.ly/3VupHLy #cohortstudies #sleepresearch

  • Longitudinal studies, like the Raine Study, thrive thanks to the generosity of volunteers/participants who return for regular assessments. Today is International Volunteer Day, and we celebrate our Generation 2 participants, the 'Raine babies' (all born between 1989 and 1991) who are all now in their 30's. Some are returning with their own children, giving rise to a record-breaking 3rd generation of Raine Study participants. Hear what they shared at our recent 2024 Symposium held at The University of Western Australia, about their experiences, and why they keep coming back.
