After five days and 142 km, the Menslink 'Great Walk' is over for another year. But the impacts will last much longer - and it's raised the most amount of money in the event's four-year history.

Region Media Group reporter Oliver Jacques has been selected as a finalist for the 2024 The Walkley Foundation for Journalism Awards: Australia’s most prestigious prize for excellence in journalism. Oliver is one of three finalists in the Coverage of Community and Regional Affairs category for his investigation into the demise of Riverina wine company Sans Pareil Estate. Oliver’s exclusive reporting uncovered allegations of tax fraud totalling $32 million and shone a light on the lavish lifestyle and spending of the winery’s young owner. “I dug into court records and liquidator documents and the story became more and more intriguing – I couldn’t believe nobody else was covering it,” Oliver said. “Allegations of corporate crime are very underreported and there’s certainly a lot of alleged victims here, including a long list of creditors that are still owed money, a lot of them from small towns in the Riverina and surrounding areas.” Oliver joined the newly established Region Riverina team in 2022 and said he was very much at home in the steadily growing Region Media Group. “I was reluctant to get back into journalism because I thought it was a brutal job, but Region is by far the best media organisation I’ve ever worked for,” he said. The 2024 Walkley Award winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the ICC in Sydney on Tuesday, 19 November.

It was invigorating to have so many Region Media supporters in the room for our quarterly networking event. Great to hear from Karen Ligdopolous about how Zango is helping keep the Canberra real estate market competitive. Thanks to Zango for sponsoring the event, the National Portrait Gallery for providing the amazing venue, and Matt from Farrah's Liquor Collective for the beverages. Stay tuned for an exciting announcement at our next event in early 2025.

We like to think we are all good sports here at Region Media Group, so it was no surprise the arrival of Steve Moeller from Canberra Brave with the coveted Goodall Cup created a buzz of excitement this week. Winners dating all the way back to the early 1900s are engraved on the side. In what's been described as one of the biggest comebacks in Canberra sporting history, Canberra Brave recently defeated Melbourne Ice to add their name for the third time.
