The Federal Government has allocated $55 million to improve mobile connectivity and resilience in regional and remote areas prone to natural disasters. The funding is available under round eight of the Mobile Black Spot Program and is part of a co-funding deal with the telco industry. This round targets disaster-prone areas and aims to boost community safety and help locals get better assistance during and after a disaster. Local councils and parliamentarians are able to nominate areas or projects for funding consideration. The New South Wales Government is working to fast-track housing for construction workers employed on major infrastructure projects in the state's Renewable Energy Zones. A new planning pathway aims to deliver more homes in the regions, speed-up renewable energy project development, help councils to manage the flow of construction workers on major infrastructure projects and ease pressure on the local rental market. The changes are designed to give clear and practical guidance to regional councils on managing spikes in housing demand and help renewable projects get off the ground faster. The New South Wales Government will make changes to planning controls to allow more housing to be used as crisis and temporary accommodation. Organisations, providers and government agencies which manage social and affordable housing will be able to use certain homes as temporary accommodation without needing a development application, or DA, to change the existing land use. This means vacant buildings could be repurposed for temporary or crisis accommodation more quickly, rather than remaining vacant before the sites are repurposed or redeveloped. Ballarat and Geelong have been named among the growth areas in Victoria where it will now be easier to build more homes on smaller parcels of land. The State Government has changed the Small Lot Housing Code to smooth the way for different types of homes to be built in metropolitan and regional growth areas. This includes a new type of home that can be constructed on lots of less than 100 square metres without a permit. The Small Lot Housing Code applies to residential and mixed-use Precinct Structure Plans in Melbourne’s Urban Growth Zone, as well as special purpose zones in Baw Baw, Ballarat, Cardinia, Casey, Geelong, Hume, Knox, Melton, Mitchell, Whittlesea, and Wyndham. The change aims to increase housing diversity and affordability to help smaller families and single-person households to find homes that meet their needs. Griffith City Council is one of nine southern Murray-Darling Basin local government authorities eligible for a share of $160 million to create jobs and boost their local economy. NSW is the first state to access the Australian Government’s $300 million Sustainable Communities Program. Under the program, the NSW Government will work with Basin communities affected by voluntary water buy backs. The first phase of targeted funding for projects across the nine eligible councils, including Griffith, is expected to start by June next year. Shovel-ready projects and investments that will grow and diversify the economy will be prioritised.
