VCAT has announced that it has completed clearing its residential tenancy backlog as part of its Backlog Recovery Program (BRP). VCAT first indicated that significant headway on the BRP had been made in July 2024. This follows a program refresh focused on expanding capabilities announced in October 2023. All users with a pending case now have a hearing date scheduled, or their case has been heard. In October 2024, it was announced that Rental Dispute Resolution Victoria (RDRV) would be embedded within VCAT. RDRV was first announced under the renter’s rights sector of its Housing Statement. Further, the Victorian government introduced legislation to establish RDRV on 27th November as part of the Consumer and Planning Legislation Amendment (Housing Statement Reform) Bill 2024. REIV continues to engage with the Victorian Government and relevant agencies on the legislative design and operation of dispute resolution services in the rental sector.
