Choosing to reuse since 1975

About us

Reverse Garbage is Australia’s largest creative reuse centre. Every year we save over 260 tonnes of valuable resources from languishing in landfill and educate over 16,000 people on the important of reuse… and we achieve all this as a self-funded not-for-profit charity. Reverse Garbage was established in 1975 by a group of teachers and community workers determined to ease pressure on the environment. Their plan was to divert industrial discards from landfill and reuse those materials in their classrooms. To this day, education is a major focus for our reuse resources. Our education team are always on the move running curriculum-based sustainability workshops in schools all over greater Sydney. We also run professional development sessions for educators, workshops for tertiary students, and creative reuse sessions at festivals and shopping centres. We fund our successful operations by accepting donations of commercial, industrial and residential waste that would otherwise end up in landfill and selling it from our Marrickville warehouse. The reuse resources are given new life by educators, artists, upcyclers, DIY enthusiasts, tinkerers, set builders, window dressers, community organisations, festivals, charities, and more. Our fans will tell you the beauty of Reverse Garbage is that you never know what you will find. Our goods are described as random, unique, obscure, retro, fabulous, interesting – but above all they are all useful. We are the epitome of ‘one man’s trash is another’s treasure’. What a wonderful day down at the warehouse! This was an amazing day designed by the fantastic Clare Walton (PhD) extending on her junkyard playground work. We shut down the carpark to make space for local kids to construct what they think life in Marrickville will look like in 2050. It was great to spend the day doing focused work with kids and seeing what they could fabricate. All the kids where so excited about their structures, diving into details and building out this imaginary world. This project was funded by the Inner West council and timber was supplied by the lovely folks at Among the Trees. Hopefully we will be able to do more projects like this as interest in risky play is growing!

Reverse Garbage has made it Canberra! Its been a long time in the making but we finally had our first run of programming at Goodies Junction! We did the RG classics: Warehouse Tour, Big Box City, and Loose Parts Play. The team had a great time working with the kids in Vinnies' Day Camps, and the kids were so creative! There will be more images to come on the Reverse Garbage Cooperative Ltd instagram. We are excited to continue delivering programs for the Vinnies' community, and are making plans to expand to the Canberra area!
